The Glass bedding under the tang of my mauser is breaking up. I assume it willl requre removing some material before I can redo it. How much do I take out and how? Do I need to go way to the wood. This is a "home made stock and there isnt a lot of extra wood. Im hoping to take out the loose piece, lay in a little Devcon liquad steel and hope for the best. Oh, I figure now is the time to pillar bed it. Thoughts on what and how to do it? Sorry no pics. The damaged area is around the tang screw (a piece of the bedding is broken out) I have floated the barrel with a couple layers of electrical tape so its probably time to do somthing around the lug too. :x Thanks for the ideas. A link to a good tutorial would be great. CL

Two schools of thought on bedding the recoil lug. Some say bed it all, others say tape the front/sides/bottom with a layer of tape. I have done it both ways and they both work just measure the recoil lug to make sure the bottom is not larger than the area than the area next to the action. You can buy pillars or make your own. the holes the pillars are fit into should be 90 degrees to the action as should the pillars. Once the bedding job is complete, clean out the pillar holes, the action screws should not bind.Rick.

Plus, if you buy any number of the pillars from Brownells, they come with excellent instructions on how to do this. Along with youtube videos and the Nosler Forum it was an easy job. Scotty

If this is the sporterized military mauser, then you only need to pillar bed the tang area. You can get this from Brownell.

D Fox, Thanks for the heads up I caught that in a Brownells video on youtube last night. I will need to wait 'til spring (so I have some where to work) but I think the rear screw will get a pillar. This is a comercial FN so I will have to check it out. Right now I am having fits trying to replace the wing safety. If I dont get an answer from Brownells soon I am gonna break down and by a shroud and 3 position (but geez I cant afford that) CL

I haven't had any experienced with any of the commercial FN model. Check the bottom metal and see if the forward action screw sleeve is in contacts with the bottom of the action lug. If it does, then it doesn't need pillar in the front. 3 position safety requires some machining work of the shroud I believe. Your better off staying with either Buehler or install trigger equip with safety. DF

Well, As I said the bedding/pillar will have to wait, but the safety issue.... I was almost ready to purchase the safety on the link below and then I realized that mine is different. It does not have the screw in the back....both of the ones I have are smooth in the back sorry no pics. Guess I am savining my pennies for a three position and a whole new shroud. Dont know but I ma disgusted. Mostly i just need to go have some fun with it.

There is the option of adding a trigger with the safety attached, like a Remington safety. I know it's not as cool as the bolt mounted safety, but you can get a trigger with safety for $40-90, and it would solve the problem for right now. You can always swap back and get the bolt shroud three-position later on. Just hang on to your current trigger and then sell the safety trigger on here or ebay or somewhere, and you're not out much for the extra trigger.

Good luck with the whole project.

Yeah, I have considered a Bold trigger w/ safety but I am somthing of a "snob" when it comes to the mauser. Cant make up my mind or find the money. CL
