I'm loading for a M&P Shield 9mm. Currently using Fed, Win, Rem, Herters and Blazer brass all separated. Is it really necessary to separate these cases as its a pain in the ... Seems like if all trimmed to length, all loaded the same etc. what difference dose it make.

The difference is case wall thickness and web area which can change the internal case capacity.
I keep all cases separated by manufacture with the exception being 45 ACP which I do not load to Max levels.
For your M&P 9mm, I think you would be fine so long as you are not loading Max level loads.

I too don't separate handgun cases and I run a max load in my 357 Sig.
Your mileage may vary. My load is a duplicate to the Speer factory load in bullet and velocity. The manual list it as a maximum load but I worked it up without the manual.

For plinking/match ammo, I don't separate and accuracy is a non-issue. (USPSA)

For home defense ammo, with premium bullets, I only use new brass with a single headstamp.
