Powder Options

I just thought I'd tap the collective knowledge base on the board and see if there are any 'must try' powders my bench is lacking. These combinations have worked well for me so far, but I'm always game to see if there is another option.

Right now I'm reloading for:
243, 7mm-08, 7mm RM, 308, 35 Whelen

I've found I've had good results with:
R19, R15, Varget, IMR4064

Those 4 powders, depending on case and bullet, have always worked out a satisfactory load.

Any others I should give a try?

h4350 for the 243.........

Interesting you should mention H4350 for the 243. It was the first bottle of powder I bought and ended up moving over to R19. I can get the 105g Amax and 95g S HPBTs to group a lot tighter with R19. Then again, it was my first batch of reloads, might be worth another look with some more experience.

Have you noticed any temp variations with RL-19?

Also what are your loads with the 105 A-max and velocity/accuracy?????

You could try IMR 4350 for the 243 Win and RL 22 for the 7mm Rem Mag.

I would use IMR 4064 for the .308 and 7mm-08. I would use IMR 4350 for the .243 Win and .35 Whelen, plus IMR 7828 SSC for the 7mm Rem Mag.

If these are working for you , I would use my dollars to practice with, not load development!!!

I haven't seen any issues with R19 yet, but my sample size is probably too small to really notice. My temp variation was probably only +/- 20 degrees so far.. (70s-90s)

I started with H4350 and had better accuracy the hotter they got. I was still getting overly large groups at a max charge of H4350, but they were closing up the faster I pushed them. (I was using the Hornady load info in their latest book.) Switching to R19, I had better groups from the get go. Give me another few weeks and I'll have more data to feel more certain what I was seeing.

Have to say though, the 95g S HPBT is working a ton better for me overall. The Amax has potential, but just about every load I've shot with the 95g Sierra has been better than acceptable. It really likes 42g of R19 in new win brass and F210m primers. (I'm getting 2860fps out of a 26" tube)

I think one of the reasons I like R19 so well is that it meters through my RCBS chargemaster so well. For some reason, I only have maybe 1 or 2 over weight charges I have to throw back in over a batch of 50 rounds. IMR4060 was probably 1 out of 10.

Hey, I have to have something to keep me busy after work during the week. :)

I was going to suggest the RL-22 for the 7mag also, or even slower for that point. My son's has a fondness for RL-25 with 160's, I would also go to a slower powder in the .243 with the bullet weights you mention. You also are somewhat redundant with the RL-15, Varget, and 4064, but nothing wrong with that considering I do similar, depending on different rifle's wants within the same general expansion ratio's. However, without more specific's on bullet weights, it's kind of hard suggest much other than generalities. But for the most part, I'm thinking you are short on more of the H-4831 and slower class.

New Winchester Brass - F210M - H4350 - H105g AMAX (Average of two 5 shot strings)
38g - 3.4"
39g - 2.33"
39.5 - 2.30"
40g - 1.4"
40.5g 1.2" (~2700fps)

New Winchester Brass - F210M - R19 - H105g AMAX (Average of two 5 shot strings)
41.5 - .83" (~2710fps)
42.0 - .81"
42.5 - .69" (~2820fps)

New Winchester Brass - F210M - R19 - S95g HPBT (Average of three 5 shot strings)
39g - 1.2"
40g - .90"
41g - .45"
42g - .50" (~2900fps)

I've settled in 41g of R19 with the 95g HPBT and use it as my standard load. (I'm at about 200 rounds with this and it's remained consistent.) Sorry about the less than stellar Chrono data, but I'm still borrowing a buddies at the range and only shoot an occasional string over it.

I'm sure if I had something other than a stock Remington 1:9 1/8 barrel, I'd probably have much different results. Since the 95s shoot so well though, I'll run out this barrel using them before she goes in for a new pipe.
