Caliber: .300 Win Mag
Bullet: 180 Grain AccuBond or Ballistic Tip
Powder Choices: IMR 7828
H4831
Reloader 22
IMR 4350

Of my powder choices, what I have on hand, which would you consider the most likely to perform best in the .300 Win Mag with a 180 Grain bullet out of a 26" Barrel?

Thank you.

RL 22 is a sure bet, 75.0 grns.

H4831 is probably another sure thing, I use it for my 270 win, but haven't tried it for my 300 winnie. But only because RL 22 works so well.

I did try IMR 4350. Nothing to brag about, but would work fine for a hunting load.

I'd be inclined to try the IMR7828 or RL22 first, H4831 second, and IMR4350 a distant third. In fact, I'd only load the 4350 if none of the other three are remotely acceptable.

75.0 grs RL 22 will get you where you want to be.

have had great luck with IMR-7828 and RL-22, my 300 win mag grouped better with IMR-7828. Lee

I agree with Jim, but I would say somewhere in the 75-77 grain mark. Seems like most 300 mags I have ran 75 grains of RL22 has been in the 2950 range, but it has room to push up into the 3000's pretty easily, while still staying in the 62-63K range.

My .300 has the shorter factory barrel, but shoots sub 1/2 MOA with H-4350. Best accuracy is with 70 gr. and 180 Gr. Sierra BT

There are no flies on H4831 for the .300 in. mag. I've been trying to chase down some Re22 to try just to see if I can get a bit more speed and possibly a tad more accuracy but if I don't find any, I do have the H4831 and WMR to play with so it's not a totally lost cause. I've been getting great speed and accuracy with the 200 gr. Speer Hot-Core and Nosler PT but I decided to try the 180 gr. Accubonds for my next hunt, if the rifle likes them. If not, I'll use them in my 06.
Nice thing is my hunt isn't until next January so I do have time.

Not ready to give up yet.
Working on Reloader 22 and IMR 7828 but the results were less than spectacular. I'll try a few more things as a couple of loads showed some potential. The first thing I'm going to do is try some different bullets. I'm not having much luck with the Nosler AccuBond or Ballistic Tip in 180 Grain. I think I'll work up a Sierra Matchking with both those powders first.

I would also say there is no flies on H4831. My rifle sure likes it with the 180 AB.

Yeah, I'd say there's no flies too. :)

I hope to get as accurate of a load.

Vince what's not happening with those two. Meaning this, are you getting huge groups (greater than 2") or are the speeds not where you like them?

Just wondering if you could find your most accurate powder charge then tweak seating depth on the bullet to get the accuracy your looking for. I just find it hard to believe RL22 and a 180 BT won't shoot in a 300 Win Mag. Most of the time, that combo is very easy to get to shoot with a minimum of fuss.

Do you have room in your mag box to do some seating out towards the rifling? Also, where are you loading the 180's currently?

Sorry for all the questions, but I know how frustrated I get when I am not getting what I am looking for.

There is no flies on RL-22 either. This is a typical group with 180 PT,s. For 200 grainers I switch to IMR-7828.

Hubcap,

Unless I'm seeing things your data seems to indicate that you're setting your bullet longer than factory COAL.

I've going to try the same thing myself, if that is in fact what you are doing, as I'm not getting any kind of accuracy out of my .300 Win Mag.

Yes indeed. I load 180 AB,s and 180 PT,s and 180 GK .015 TO .020 OFF THE LANDS. I have a long throated rem 700 rifle and a generous magizine. I have never loaded any 300mag shorter than 3.400. The sammi max of 3.340 is basically a length factory ammo is made to in order to ensure the ammo fits all types of actions. I am acually using 3.600 coal with the AB.
