Greetings Due to things I have no control over supplies are getting unpredictable and choices need to be made. I shoot 45 ACP and 44M plus the 45 Long Colt. I am watching the supply of Winchester large pistol primers dwindle down and there on the same shelf are 2K of CCI 350 large magnum pistol primers. If I were to utilize these what changes are in order? Reduced powder charges? Is there any very dangerous practices to avoid here? There is also two boxes of Federal 215 large magnum rifle primers I think I got a while back to use in the 300 Weatherby and I would also like to make good use of, 270 30-30 and perhaps 45-70 are the likely candidates. Thanks in advance for any advice. Newysan

Anytime you change a component, it is a sound practise to drop back the charge by 5 to 10% and work up to ensure that you avoid excessive pressure in the load. Generally, there are no serious problems, but there are instances of a surprising pressure increase.

Newysan, the .44M and .45 Colt should be no issue for CCI 350 primers, just drop back your loads a little and do some load development. I would stay away from using them in the .45ACP. Same for the .270 Win, it should handle Federal 215 primers with load development. Magnum primers would be a no-no for me in the .30-30 because of small capacity case. The 45-70 uses small rifle magnums in the Buffalo Bore factory ammo, so judge for yourself?
