For those that use progressive presses to reload handgun ammo or 223, do you crimp and seat at the same time, or do you use separate dies for this?

Next question, do you or have you used a RCBS progressive or do you feel there is a better unit? Not looking for anything automated, just a press that is a little quicker than the single stage.

Thanks

I use a Dillon Square Deal B and it has 4 stations. I currently run 45acp and 9mm out of it.

1 decap
2 prime and powderthrow with case mouth flare
3 bullet seat
4 crimp.

I have been looking into the RCBS Turret press to perform 223 exclusively, and you could set it up either way.

When I reload 41 mag for handgun on the Rockchucker, I seat and crimp in the same die, on the same stroke.

Hundreds of thousands of rifle and pistol in my Dillon 550B. Always crimp in a seperate stage. Haven't tried the RCBS unit, no ned since I have the Dillon.Rick.

Dillon 650 here reloading exclusively 9mm

I have the typical 5 station setup:

resize/deprime
powder drop/flare
powder check
seat
crimp

With a 5 station press, there is little reason to combine seating and crimping, unless you are going for a bullet feeder. It also depends on what type of bullets and what cartridge and crimp you're using. If you're doing a heavy roll crimp, you want to use two stages. If you're using jacketed/plated bullets in an automatic, you can get away with one. I've heard some of the guys who shoot lead prefer two stages, as it's less likely to shave lead off the bullet when seating/crimping. (No personal experience with lead bullets, so I can't speak with any first hand knowledge.)

My personal mantra when reloading is keep it simple. Using seating and crimping in separate stations means I can adjust the seating die or the crimp die without hosing the adjustments of the other function. That alone is worth running two.

I dont crimp 9mm, 40, or 45.

38, 44, 223 I crimp and seat at the same time.

I use the powder charging station to bell the case, so I actually only use 3 stations.

This is my reasoning besides that I shoot about 100 - 500 of these rounds every time we go out. I just get tired of reloading 200 + rounds every weekend on the single stage, messing with one die to seat and crimp. I don't mind buying more dies, but the single stage press has my right arm looking like Popeye.

Thanks for all of the input. I have been lusting over a Dillion, but I am kinda brand loyal... but that may change :)

I have the Dillon 550B. Loaded thousands of rounds of all kinds of pistol, .30 Carbine, and .223 through it.

I have the Hornady LNL AP. Haven't set it up yet but I've watched a ton of videos on its operation.

I was tired of working pistol ammo on a single stage.

I am also planning to seat and crimp seperatly as I use the Lee FCD for crimping operations.

Two Dillon RL 550's. Excellent product with above excellent service. But, I just looked at Dillon web site and due to the current bozos in DC there is a SIX week backlog for their products, which is understandable panic related market frenzy. In closing "Don't trust a Govt. that does not trust you to own a gun' Period. Newysan

I've done both the separate seat and crimp and made many thousands of pistol rounds with them combined. I see no difference.

Thanks all. I am also going to look at a LNL. I got a chance to use one to load some 270's and it was a dream to operate.

Mine should be here any day now.. This wait is killing me!

I do my crimp in a seperate opperation. I actually de-prime mine in my single stage so I can remove the primer crimp and then I load it in my Dillon.
