Proper way to neck down brass?

I'm having a little problem with my 8mm-06 brass. I took some nickle plated brass that hand been necked up to .338-06 and necked it down to my 8mm-06. The problem I'm having is the bullets are not staying properly seated in the cartride while I'm firing the rifle. There isn't enough neck tension to hold the bullet in place and they are sliding back into the case.

Do I need to take the necks back down to .308 diamter before going back to 8mm? Would a Lee crimp die for 8X57 work with the 8mm-06 cartridge and improve the neck tension? How can I fix this problem?

nickel casings are not as soft as standard brass. Few people seem to reccomend using it if you can get away without using it. I know it looks so cool thought!. I am guessing that your nickel has more "memory" than brass would. I know they are much harder to resize. You shouldn't have to go to the .308 though. Have you tried not using the expander on your die? Or try pressing each case twice in a row.

I used the nickle brass to keep from confusing my .338-06 with my .30-06 cartridges because I didn't have properly headstamped brass. I bought new Norma brass for my .338-06 so I thought I'd use them on this 8mm-06 for the same reason, more safety than cool.

Britz, I'll definatly try what you suggest and see if that helps.

When I have been testing various loads I use a permanent marker and mark the loads on the case (and or bullet). I use a dry media tumber and it still takes off the marker, but it may work for you as well. ALso, not sure, but maybe you could use strictly remington brass for your 8mm and win brass for your 338 or something like that too. Good luck

Try decapping with a universal decapper and omit the expander when sizeing the first time. I am not sure but if memory is a problem this may help keep the necks at a smaller ID to start. Once they have been fireformed they should be OK.
