Went to the shootingrange here today to test my load. Velocity was 1038 m/sec or little over 3400 ft/sec. Accuracy was absolutely minut-of-barn-gable. No sign of overpressure except the natural flat primer which is always seen on a full loaded Weatherby round.
To ride straight and speak the truth, of the shots I have fired in this rifle, accuracy isn't its strongest side. I do much better with ironsights and my ol' 1913 Mauser in 8x57.
The testing here today was done at 200meters. Average group was 6x6" inches. I can easily do 4x4" with the 8x57 with ironsights at this range from a bench.

Time for a new tube????

Tried any other bullets?

I would certainly anticipate a greater degree of accuracy from the cartridge. I believe Fotis is correct in suggesting the need of a new tube.

Tried Hornady 105Amax, Sierra fmj, Barnes tsx also with some dissatisfied results.
New barrel might be the answer, although looking down the barrel the rifling looks sharp.
If a new barrel is the answer I want a 27" tube with 1:9 twist and a slight heavier..
we'll see..

Just curious when was the last time you scrubbed the cooper out of the barrel? and checked the action screws. Weatherbys have been known to loosen screws.

...that's a very good question you are asking here..haha...

The bore has not been scrubbed by me yet, but the actionscrews are tight and the barrel is free floating is checked. I will here tonight let the barrel cook in solvent to dissolve any residues of jacket material. That might squeeze the groups down to 4x4"..:)

Hi Jens -
I had a "made in Germany" 240 back in the 80's that would not shoot either. I tried everything possible from bullet seating depths to as many different powders as I could afford to buy. Nothing seemed to work. Best groups at 100 yards were in the 2" range.
Have you put a bore scope in the chamber/throat area to see what it really looks like? I have seen some bores that looked clean and shiny to the naked eye that were really alligator skinned once a bore scope was used. You may want to see if a carbon ring has developed as well that is causing some of the problem.

Problem solved!!. Problem fixed!!(what seems to)

Loose scopebases was the problem. Scope bases cleaned(degreased), surfice where the scopebases will surmount cleaned(degreased)..thread on screws and screwholes cleaned(degreased). All again assembled, but this time with Lock-Tight.

I have also scrubbed the barrel, and the rifling looks absolutly new cut, so now I will load up a batch of rounds to again take to the range here this weekend. I have sat my hopes high again..:).
I wanna see thing thing make bullets scream out of the barrel. I will try too the 80grain Barnes TSX. Maybe they can reach the 3550 ft/sec with a care approach?.

..Oh I forgot..actionscrews have likewise recieved same treatment.

Very nice buddy. Hope that settles it in for ya. Looking forward to some groups with that rifle!

Here is from today rangesession.

First 4 shots including 1 sighter.

As viewed the 1st sighter printed in the left corner bottom 7 O`clock. From here I dialed in.
The "handpainted" dot is about 3" in diameter. Shot # 1,2,3 printed "okay", and here I actually got a little excited..

I paited a new dot with less diameter in the naiv believe it would help to make a smaller group.
I realized on my 2nd aiming dot the cross on this German scope was too big, and I had through this session a great difficulty to focus and my follow-through afterwards which became obvious.

Shot# 4,5,6,7 printed all over, which proved my teory as I had before shooting. I couldn´t find focus on the smaller dot. From here I used the first larger dot I painted.
I dialed too much to the right which is viewed.

Shot# 8,9,10 printed to the right. I dial a few clicks to the left. Shot# 11,12..out of ammo!!.
Between shot# 8,9,10 and # 11,12 I had the scope of for chronograph test. I had unfortunatly had to use 4 shots before the chrono "caught" the bullet.(waist of ammo it became).
The load was. 55,5grain Norma MRP. BUllet 87grain Barnes TSX.V0= 1019 m/sec(3343 ft/sec).

Conclusion so far:
I had hoped for more velocity from that load, but okay one had to start somewhere.
Accuracy: The S&B scope isn´t made for shooting at very small targets/objects at all. It´s a good scope for the average deer rifle at average range in the average caliber, but not for over 200meters shooting at quartersize targets at longrange. This can be improved. I have had scoped where the crosshair could stay within a quarter at 200m..no sweat. As far as this load it is difficult to say if it is accurate enough for anything really. I had hoped for more to ride straight and speak the truth..but again one has to start some place.

Looks pretty decent. Targets make a big difference to me. When I start shooting with thicker crosshairs which I like more for hunting, I have to get clear aiming points and also use a 6 O'Clock hold on the dots. Seems to work much better for me.

Looks like it is coming together well though RM. That's a cool cartridge for sure.
