Question for you Model 70 nuts...

It's supposed to be AAA french walnut. Man the fit and finish on this rifle is awesome. And just in case its not readily obvious, it is a .270 win. Thanks for the good words. The flip side looks even better.

That's beautiful Bruce. I could see enjoying a rifle like that!

Man, it makes my rifles look like old Remington's!

Bruce, beautiful rifle. I have a La Bantchni stocked, custom, .270 (1949) Winchester Super Grade that cannot touch that stock. Is that Featherweight from the Winchester Custom Shop?

The rifle is a Jack O'Connor tribute custom. I think the Winchester Custom Shop put them together.

I have (2) scopes on my present Model 70's. They are a Leica ER 2.5-10x42 and a Zeiss HD5 3-15x42. They each cost about $1000. The Leica is normally about $1500 but they are discontinuing this model and EuroOptics.com has them on sale. Both are excellent optics.

I am retired and on a financial leash now and can not afford custom Stockmaker's or top drawer optics anymore.

But you can surely enjoy the beautiful rifles you own, and have owned, and the memories of many hunts. Quite a few hunts if I've been reading your posts correctly!

Guy

Yup, I have hunted deer for over 50 years and elk for about 45 years. I have lots of memories of hunts and deer camp with friends whom I have known for my lifetime. Most are dead now but no complaints, Guy.

I made my choice for a scope and got it ordered up. Its gonna be a 6x36mm Leupold in dual dovetail bases and low rings. I think the 6x will be plenty of magnification, seeing as I always carry my variables on 6x when afield, and it won't detract from the rifle.

Am a huge fan of the fixed 6x for hunting. It should work out well for your Bruce!

I slobber at the sight of such a beautiful rifle. There is something classy about a rifle with ebony forend tip and a Schnabel forend. I have 2 Featherweights in 264WM and 7 Mauser and both have the Leupold FX-6 scopes on them. A lot less to go wrong in a fixed power scope.

Got the leupold 6x mounted and took it to the range this afternoon. Got it rough zeroed and fired up the first three shot group. I think its got some possibility. The load was a 130 Partition with 59 grs of H-4831sc in a winchester case and Federal magnum primer. OAL was made to fit the magazine at 3.342. The case is new and neck sized.

That's pretty danged good Bruce. What a rifle buddy! Congrats again on such a fine rifle.

Congrats!

And who would have thought of a .270 doing well with that load?

Yeah, I'd say you're touching paradise with that load. Fine shooting, Bruce.

Man I am sooooo tired of all these .270s shooting so well.........

just kidding. Awesome rifle Bruce and great shooting.

Guy-I was in the same conundrum 3 or so years ago. I went to buy a featherweight, and they had a perfect super grade next to it for a couple hundred more, I agonized, then bought the super grade. On numerous occasions in the field I have wished it would have been a featherweight with a shorter barrel and less weight and an all-around handier rifle. However the super grade is quite a shooter. With 61 grains of H4831SC and 130 grain ballistic tips it will shoot under a half inch. It is also just a gorgeous rifle and is somewhat hard to carry a field because the wood is so beautiful. Good luck with your decision!
