I am going to mess with the 338 Win Mag and the 275gr Speers I have. I have RL22 and IMR 7828. I will be using CCI250 primers and be shooting them in a 24" barreled M70. I will also be using Winchester Cases, if it matter. If anybody can run a Quickload, I would appreciate it. I think 64k PSI is the roof for the 338 Win Mag. Scotty

That would be what I am hoping for. I have 50 of them, so I want to do this as smart as I can. I am thinking I may skip IMR 7828 and just go with RL22. I have found some data that says 72gr of RL22 will go 2617FPS... Not sure, but anything in that area, with good accuracy will work for me. I am going to go 70-71-72 and see what shoots, if any? If I find a winner. I will just load them up and then keep them for a special occasion. Scotty

Heck yeah, I want them!!! AS long as they don't want a million a box. I will take them. That is the reason I grabbed the ones I have, they sold them to me for about 12-14.00 bucks or something.
Here are a couple of pictures of the loaded 338 Win Mag and the 275 bullet next to them. I ended up just loading RL22. I bet it will be accurate, as it is in about everything else I use it in. Pretty neat bullet. Be nice to stuff into something. Elmer seemed to like them for some reason.. Scotty

That bullet will punch through about anything. When that amount of mass begins to travel, it will not be easily stopped. It does look wicked.

I am headed to the range this morning, so hopefully, if the weather stays decent, I will get some chronographing in and see how it shoots. It does look like a cool bullet, and it has decent BC numbers, so it should be a good bullet to mess around with. We'll see. Scotty

RL22 is very very similar to MRP btw.

Here is the target from yesterday. 70gr's of RL22 netted me about 2500, 71gr was 2600 and 72gr was 2650. This was with RL22, CCI250 and WW Cases COAL 3.34". I pulled the shot on 71gr's a little I think. 72gr was very good, and the speed was excellent for that big bullet. I couldn't believe how accurate that bullet was. Plus, the recoil was actually very mild. I am braked, but even still, it was very tame. The cases show zero signs of pressure. I think I have found my load for BIG game. I am really excited this bullet shot so well. I know it wasn't an exhaustive test, but man, I am happy. Accuracy and Speed out of them. Very happy with the 338!
Oh, and QL was very accurate for me on this rifle and load. Thanks for all those that helped out with this. Scotty

I think so too Mike. I think I will load the rest of the 40 bullets I have up in the cases I have left and set them aside for something special, if I ever get the chance. I was really happy to get 2650 out of them. I can't wait to try some 250gr Partitions or Accubonds. I would think I could get a really good load out of them also. Scotty

That mass at that velocity would be suitable for anything on this continent or even on the African continent. Kodiak? Buffalo? All would succumb to that load.

I would think so too Mike. I kinda of wished they still made them, and I could buy them for the money I paid for these. They shoot so well and have a pretty decent BC so they would shoot plenty flat for 400 yard shooting or so. It was a good day. I knew when I looked threw the scope after putting two on top of on another, I would blow the 3rd, but it still went into an inch. That seems like incredible power and accuracy to me. Now I know why the old timers really preached about the power of the 338's. Scotty

JD338 turned me on to the other stash of 338 275gr Speers and I bought them up. Turned out they were priced fair and I kinda like them big slugs. Thanks again to all those who assisted me with the load. Now I have to load up some and get a zero with them. Might have to try them out before the Accubonds. It would be nice to capture one and see what it looks like. Wonder how many water jugs it would take to find one? Scotty

That much mass moving at any reasonable velocity makes capture difficult. A 250 grain slug from my .356 (muzzle velocity of 2050 fps) penetrated over 36 inches of wet cardboard and was lost in the hillside. A 160 grain Partition starting at 3000 fps from a 7mm RM penetrated ~24 inches. I was impressed with the penetration of those heavy bullets. It set me on the path of favouring heavy for calibre bullets for many years.

Jim, me too. I think I will have to start saving some milk jugs for this test. Should be fun though. Thanks again for the heads up.
Mike, I kinda like those long bullets. I know it kinda goes against the grain of most of todays shooting and stuff, but looking at ballistics, they still hold their own for a long way out, and seem like they would be very good at digging deep, and causing a wide and long wound channel. Be fun to see what they do in milk jugs. Might be a test once I get back from PA. Scotty
