i've been working with Ramshot Grand for a 150 Nosler Partition load for my 270 win that would replace IMR-7828. I started out checking out a few loads to see what the velocity potential would be. My components are of course 150 Partition, Nosler case, CCI 200 primer 3.35 oal
The results: 60.0 grs 2822 fps
60.5 grs. 2825 fps
61.0 grs. 2877 fps
61.5 grs. 2907 fps
62.0 grs. 2930 fps.'t
At this point things were looking good so I loaded up a few rounds at 62.2 grs and 62.4 grs. This is where things started going off script.
62.2 grs. 2935 fps, 2967 fps, and 2920 fps. I'm thinking maybe its because it is just plain hot in Texas at the moment. I proceeded with
62.4. grs. 2904 fps, 2953 fps, and 2903 fps. Now this was letting the barrel cool weel between shots too. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Again maybe just a very hot morning.
Back to the drawing board. One last shot here. Since I observed no pressure signs, primers looked good and the cases were barely bulged. I loaded up five rounds at 62.5 grs. The results being 3030, 3005, 2995, 3034, and 2973. A 25.3 fps standard deviation is not what I call acceptable but it was better than the slightly lighter charges. Again it was an awful warm day so maybe this powder just doesnt' like it hot. And I didn't like the 3030 and 3034, that has got to be pusing some pressure. Then I had an idea and Scotty backed it up about using a magnum primer. So I backed the load down 62.0 grs using a Federal 215 primer the results follow. 3004, 2998, 2997, 2983, 2994. Average velocity 2995 fps with a standard deviation of 8.8. Now were cooking with gas. I will also add that this morning was a great deal cooler than the previous mornings I shot so I still haven't eliminated hot temps as causing Grand to behave erratically. I loaded up a bunch to see if the round remains consistant. Time will tell. What do y'all think?
I almost forgot to mention, the 62 gr load with the magnum primer fired off a 3 shot half inch group.
The rifle was my Model 70 featherweight with 22" barrel.

good to know! i have yet to try grand, match and hd powders but do have all 3. i have only 1 270win (22" blr). with 10 twist it's limited to 150's which is fine. the 270wiin is just as tough as the fabled 30-06. 2 great cartridges for decades to go!

Not surprised with your results using magnum primers. I used the same primer testing Hunter with a 130gr BT in my 270win and it did well. Dan.

Bruce, I had better results using magnum primers with some of the magnum powders in the 270. In particular I remember magnum primers worked better for me with IMR 7977.
