I went to the range today to introduce a new shooter to the game. He was breaking in a Tikka Lite 300WSM topped with a Leupold VX2 3.5-10X50. I'm worse than a DI when it comes to break-in, but the fellow was pretty stoked. We're going out again later this week. In between working with him, I managed to shoot a few of my rifles. I put a few rounds through my 30-06, just to use them up. It is time for a new load work-up on that rifle. The groups aren't as great as I wanted. This is my 30-06.

In the interim, I'd put a new scope on my 7WSM. It is now topped with a Leica 2.5-10X42 ER. The scope is very clear and quite nice. When I get a chance to work at last light, I'll give a write-up on it. Here is the rifle.

Today was sight-in with the load I've used for hunting, built around 160 grain AB. The rifle has accounted for multiple whitetail and mule deer since I've owned it. It was one of the last production models to leave the New Haven factory, and from the first shot very well. It hasn't lost anything, though I'll probably revisit the load this summer.

I also shot my old 7RM. This was one of the first Winchesters I ever purchased some years ago, having owned other brands before that. I haven't shot this rifle at game for some years. I had some hunting rounds squirreled away, and thought I'd take the old girl out to the dance. Maybe she deserves at least one more whirl. According to my records, she has more than enough rounds that accuracy should be seriously degraded. This is what she looks like ready for the dance.

She is topped with an older Zeiss 3-9X36 Diavari, which is still amazingly bright. When I pulled the trigger, she still managed to please me. With 160 grain Partitions, she was good enough to take to the dance, though she wasn't able to do what she once did with that load.

However, when I popped in the load I first made up more years ago than I care to remember, it was like she was new all over.

The 175 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws are getting someone rarer today, but those I have still would work wonders on an invitation for any moose (or elk, or black bear) to come home so they could join me for dinner.

Mike,

Those are some nice looking rifles and they all shoot very well.
Glad you were able to take out a new shooter. Way to go Mike!

Those Featherweights sure are pretty rifles Mike. What load are you using in that 30-06? IMR4350 about 57.4 grs. with a 165 gr. AccuBond or Partition sure works for me and did so in two 30-06 rifles.

My dad shoots nothing and I mean nothing but 160 gr. Partitions in his 7 RM Mike and that thing is deadly. It's a "push feed" model 70, but still shoots great.

Nice job sir.

I'm using 165 grain Hornady InterBonds charged with 59.5 grains of IMR 4831 in my 30-06. Velocities are excellent (~2950 fps) and groups are just sub-MOA. This rifle is slated for some attention this summer. I'd like to focus on 165/168 grain bullets, hopefully keeping the velocity up. The 7WSM is shooting 160 grain ABs charged with 70 grains of MagPro. Velocities are ~3000 fps and groups are sub-MOA. I've also worked on a load with 160 grain Sierra HP and 60 grains of IMR 4350. Velocities are ~2900 fps and accuracy is ~0.5 inches. Either will work for me. The AB load has taken multiple mule deer and whitetails, though I haven't used it for elk or moose at this point. The 7RM launches 160 grain PTs charged with 59.5 grains of H100V at ~3000 fps. Accuracy is around 0.60 inches when I do my part. The 175 grain TBBC load I historically used was built with 60.2 grains of WXR at ~2800 fps and accuracy of ~0.40 inches. The load I was shooting today was charged with 79.0 grains of H870 at ~2950 fps and an accuracy of ~0.50 inches. For a rifle that has had as many rounds as this old girl has tolerated, the load is still very accurate. I may just have to take it out this weekend to see if I can tag a black bear.

Mike seeing those photos brings back real good memories
I am glad your friend was able to get out, what did you think of the 50mm he had place on his rifle?

Blessings.
Dan

He was craning his neck and stated on several occasions that he couldn't see. I explained about the sight picture and had him look through one of my rifles. He thought it was much easier to see. I encouraged him to consider another scope with a forty mm objective. However, he was concerned about cost. I suggested taking the scope back and exchanging for a VX3. We'll see what he does. He wants to come out with me later this week. I explained that I would be working pretty hard the next time I go out, however, as I have several rifles that are waiting attention.

Hide those SS FW's from my eyes!! Those are such a pretty rifle. Must resist for a while from getting 2 or 3 of them bad part is I already know which calibers I want/need to add to my collection.

Yeah, Jake, I kinda fell in love with stainless and walnut when Winchester first came out with them. It's a love affair that has continued to this day.

Great shooting Mike. That Leica looks very nice on your 7WSM. If you can, can you get a snap of the elevation turret on it? I would like to see what it looks like. Is it the #4 Reticle in that as well?

That 175 grain TBBC load in your 7mm Rem Mag is one of them that leaves nothing on the table. What a hammer it must be. I can't see that rifle being wore out! Great shooting. Might have to do a little work with my old 7RM when I get back home. That kinda reinvigorates me a little..

Scotty,

It is the Leica 4A reticle. I'll try to get a picture when I'm out today. It will be an abbreviated day at the range. I worked all day yesterday working up loads. My wife helped me at 10 p.m. last evening. She picked up several boxes of prepared ammunition--by the box tops. Yup, all on the floor. Those cartridges are now all pulled and slated for reloading. Well, it does keep me occupied.

Ugh. I don't mark my different loads in any manner and rely on their position in my ammo boxes to differentiate them. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me.

Ditto!

I'm too big to cry and it was too time consuming to ignore, so I laughed. She was horrified. In the course of the first hour she made about three trips to my reloading room to apologise and tell me how sorry she was. I repeatedly assured her that accidents happen, and fortunately, the bullets can be pulled, the powder dumped in the strawberries and the cartridges reloaded. Hey, maybe this can be parlayed into another rifle.

Nice thinking! A guy needs to take advantage of any leverage he may have, actual or dilusional.

Mike, I really like those two stainless 7s you have. Those are sharp looking!

A guy can't get to upset at the family when they try to help out and things go wrong. My daughter is just over two years old and "helps" me reload sometimes. I was loading the other day while she was napping (I try to do all my powder work while she is not around to "help"). I had an open 50 ct. box that I was putting different loads in for some more load testing for the 270 WSM. She woke up and walked in to see me and before I know it she is handing me loaded rounds out of my box. Three or four rounds, all from different spots in the box. Luckily they were all with one powder, so pulling them and reloading them was not to big of an issue.

I have been "helped" a few times as well. I do now write the powder charge and an abbreviation on the side of the case in case of accidents. I have done it myself a few times so I can't blame anyone but my big hands!

I spun the others so the marking wasn't in this picture, but man, it has saved my bacon a few times and it comes right off in the tumbler too..

Mike, I am looking forward to seeing that Leica. I think I am going to have to look at one eventually. I think they look great as well..

Jake, I gotta tell you, I am happy as heck whenever my daughter or son help me out. A couple grains of powder is worth it.. I know you are training her well though! I imagine she will be a good shooter if she takes after ma and pa in the least!

It sure makes my heart warm when she sees a bird out the window and wants me to shoot it, or gives me a high five after every shot at the range. She was sitting on my lap the other day running the drill that I chucked the trimmer into. I would put the brass in and push the drill and she would pull the trigger. I wouldn't trade her for the world.

Sorry for the small hi jack mike.

Yeap, them kids assisting us is worth every second. That was a great mental picture Jake. Couldn't have said it better. Just hope them kids are getting proper Model 70's... Wanna make sure they are taken care of!

Mike.... This all fits into your range post, right?

Wife or kids helping same difference. Maybe one day in the distance future I can fully understand it. I have enough troubles with myself I don't think I need any additional help.

Scotty,

These comments fit my range post perfectly. Hey, its all about fun and including others. I just got back in from another day at the range. I was working with a .338 RUM today. It gave me sub-MOA groups with 225 grain TSX and Magnum, and velocities approaching 3000 fps. With the muzzle brake, it is a pussy cat from the bench. I'll try to post some more shortly. I even have a picture of the turrets from the Leica.

Nice! Good to work with the big guns once in awhile. Makes you appreciate the softer recoilers!
