Well played with the 6-284 my grandpa built 90 AB and it was a complete disaster. Nothing that even came remotely close to group. 4-6" best. I even shot one at 25 yards and it was 2". I think I'm gonna be changing bullets. Wondering if its either the bullet and rifle or maybe that barrel is shot out.

Shot the 22-250 to verify sight in and load and its just awesome. I won't be doing anything with it other than shooting that load.

Also played with the 338-06AI and I was pretty happy with it considering its the first time I've shot it for accuracy as I had previously had a slight issue with it. I think I'm pretty close with it and the 225 AB. 5- shot group went 1.346" @ 2793 ES of 18 SD of 7. It was really surprising what a primer change did.

I'd be pretty happy with those results, Jake. Fine shooting, man.

Those look pretty good. Sounds like there is something seriously off with the 6/284, maybe the twist or something.

That 338 is looking great Jake as is the 22-250. Seems odd the 6-284 is that wonky with the 90 ABs. They shoot really well in my 243.

I think I'll try the 70 or 95BT with it. I love my 22-250 it just shoots lights out all the time. As for the 338 I think I'm really close. I just need to shoot again to verify and possibly shorten her up just a touch. I still haven't played with the trigger but I felt really good about it. I don't think I'd have any problems dropping an elk tomorrow with that load.

Do you know the rate of twist on the 6-284 barrel?

Guy,

I have no idea the only thing I know about the barrel is its a Shielen 26" and it's stamped 12/31/69 so I assume that is when it was installed. I wish I knew more with it being that old I'd guess its a standard 6mm twist. I did have some 100 gr Speers that I was just using up that it shot really well so I'm hoping you are right and it's a stabilization issue.

Thanks Mike. It always feels good to shoot well. That's why I'm thinking I have something up with the 6-284 cause I really don't think I could have shot that poorly and not know that.

Definite confidence builder there. Have you put this load using CFE223 across a chrony?

Yep 3900ish. That's the 3rd sub .2 inch group I've shot with it I've also shot a 5 shot under .25" so I'm very happy. The load there with my 338 is also CFE223 2793 average with ES of 18 and SD of 7 with a 225 AB. I just can't find any of it. But I got my hands on some H380 and 414 so it looks like I'm gonna have to do some more LD. But it's been impressive so far meters great and burns clean not only in the barrel but cases as well.

What I've discovered in my little bit of reloading is that finding the right powder is the first thing.

For example, I tried H4831, RL22, and a couple others that I don't remember, don't have my notes handy, but it wasn't until I went with IMR 4350, for the 25/06, that I started getting groups instead of shotgun patterns. After powder the next thing was finding a bullet the rifle shot well.

I tried Nosler Ballistic Tips, 100 grain, Hornady SST, Barnes, and it wasn't until I tried the Hornady 87 Grain SP that it started grouping. That's still my most accurate load in that rifle but I learned that my rifle liked mid-weight bullets with a flat base. It shoots Nosler Partitions, 100 Grain, well too. I was wanting to use a heavier bullet with a boat tail but couldn't get them to shoot to my satisfaction. I was lucky to keep them on paper at 100 Yards. So sometimes it's not what you want to shoot but what your rifle tells you it likes.

Maybe someone can come up with a powder/bullet combo for a heavier bullet with a boat tail that my rifle likes but I haven't found it and I'm done trying. Unlike many I don't find reloading enjoyable. It's just a means to an end for me. First find the powder, then the bullet. After that, seating depth. Too much work as far as I'm concerned but I do it because I want to be as accurate as I can be.

Good luck in your search.

Mine's a 26" tube you might get 3950. Results are impressive on jackrabbits and P-dogs. You can't see the hit but after you hear a solid thump and see chunks flying through the air you know without a doubt. The one the other night was awfully impressive.
