Have the tree stands all set, Guns are shot in and ready. Took my daughter, who is married, my hunting buddy too. out to the range today. She wants to use the 35 Whelen this year for Deer!!
Wanted her to get the feel for shooting 225 Accubonds vs using the 30-06 in the past. After a few shots from the lead sled accompanied by one adjustment, I had her shoot one shot from the lead sled and one shot from sand bags at a clean target. She cut the first hole in half with the second shot from the sand bags. 8)

Shot a .442 three shot group (the second one) with the 30-06 with the 165 Ballistic Tip load last week.
I believe the deer are in big trouble, hoping to put some Venison on the ground this year. Anxious to try out the 165 on some Deer.

Shoot Don, I'm anxious to hear about your daughter killing a deer with the Whelen. Great shooting her part. Sounds like that 30-06 is very dialed in too! Good luck buddy! Hope you both score big! Scotty

Good luck with your hunt's, I'm guessing the 35 Whelen with Accubonds should suffice for whitetailed deer :) make sure you post some pictures.

It'll be great to hear of your daughter connecting on a deer. Let her know that we're all pulling for her. Hey, dad, it'll be all right if you tag out as well.

Will keep you posted as the Hunting Season unfolds. She is anxious to get her first Buck. A Doe works for me to try out the 165 BT and provide some good Table Fare!

Don

I'm with you... got back from checking on things at deer camp w/ my two boys and 3 of my 10 hunting pards, and we're good to go here in Michigan! Only 1 wk left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

efw,
Go get em buddy. Let the excitement start to build. Heading to the woods Saturday to make a few tree stand adjustments prior to the opener the 19th.

Don

Don,

Good luck to you and your daughter. If she scores with the Whelen, I'm betting you will be out a rifle.

JD,
No doubt about it. Already she is telling me she likes the Whelen. I've been telling her about how it knocks deer DRT. So me and my big mouth have created an uphill battle to pry her hands off the thing.

"created an uphill battle to pry her hands off the thing"

Yeah, good luck with that! It's her rifle now you know...

Yeah, once she sees the mighty Whelen speak, I imagine she will be a fan.. Might have to start looking for a replacement! Scotty

You guys are so dead on. Can't wait for her to blast a buck with the Whelen.

Don

I think you people are teasing me  Wait until I get my Whelen I will even learn how to post photos so that I can show everyone. I am just kidding. I am glad that your daughter is hunting with you it so nice to hear about families doing things together.

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks Dan,
She is excited as always when Deer Season arrives, even though Married she still makes time for us to hunt together.

Don

I'm fired up for Saturday, it has been rough hunting up our way. Warm temps and high winds most of this season. I am struggling to decide what to carry though. Right now I have decided to carry my .358 Win, 45/70, (2) 30/06, .35 Rem, .260 Rem and my .307 Winchester.

I am going to be tired if I can't narrow it down some more.

Same here Heath. Have the 45-70 and 264 up to bat. Then my boy will have his 243 and 35 Rem. too many rifles and not enough deer! Good luck buddy! Scotty

Heath,
Maybe I can help you there. If most of your shots will be within 150 yards, hands down take the 358 win. That thing is a DRT rifle like the Whelen. Second choice would be the 30-06.

Wishing you good success,
Don

Where I hunt 99% of my shots are within 40yds. I have killed deer with the 30/06, .358 Win, .35 Rem and the .260 Rem.

I guess I'll just flip coins and eliminate rifles early Saturday morning.

Heath,

You certainly have an eclectic mix of cartridges. Any of them will work, but I do understand how we rifle cranks are torn trying to decide. It is as if we are choosing against another rifle that we love. Whatever you choose, there are a lot of us pulling for you.

Heath,
Flipping the coin works in this situation. You can't go wrong with any of those choices. Forgive me but I'm just partial to the 35 Whelen or anything in 35 Cal.

Don
