Rechamber from 7 RM to 7 STW?

I am having fun with this process. Actively shopping for another rifle to serve as the donor for a custom rig. I think this youngster will follow through and pick up the ABolt.

7-300 here I come. Or STW. Or 7-300...

The rifle will be his officially this weekend. He called to say he has the cash. Glad I could make that work.

So, new options. I could pick up an older blued Win M70 XTR in 270 WBY for a donor for 525 at most. All I would use from this rifle would be the action, everything else would get parted out. Or I could pick up a stainless Rem 700 mag action for 475ish. Where to start for a 7-300WM? Any custom actions out there for similar or less?

Think I will keep shopping. Tough to find good priced used rifles this close to deer season.

The 270 WBY or the 700 would be great builders. The Winchester would be my preference just cause of the safety on the rifle, but you could always add a 3 pos safety if you wanted it.

The 7-300 is a cool cat. Hope you do it and find all the pieces your looking.

Here is the scary part: A well trimmed .270Weatherby bites the 7STW in the azz ballisticwise that we are talking ½inches all the way out. I know a 7STW with a 160grain bullet can do 3300 ft/sec, but an angry .270Wea will do 3280 ft/sec with a 150grain. 20 ft/sec + 10 grain bullet ain´t gonna move much when looking at the 300 yards ballistic.
If you have a .270Weatherby and you really are speed addictive go to next level...look at the 27 Nosler. The 7STW will only see tail lights on that thing...

I say why not do it? The 7mm STW is a neat round with lots of poop with a 160 AccuBond. I have a friend who owns one and it's very accurate out to 1000 yards, maybe more.

Most people whom I have known who have a 7mm STW end up talking to themselves after 5 years of load development. Ask Bill. After 51 years of messing with the 7mm Rem Mag, I am convinced that the .280 Rem AI is the 7mm for me if I ever sell my custom 7mm Rem Mag.

I have a very nice Blued, Remington 700 Mag Length action, with a new, blued, lilja barrel, with under 250 rounds through it, already in 7mm STW. The action has been worked by Hill Country Rifles (receipts included). Dies, new and used brass, timney trigger, and a few bullets for $650. Two factory stocks, would also come with it. The group shot by Hill Country, is just a bit over .700 of an inch. The group shot by my gunsmith a month ago, is just a little over a 1/2 inch. It won't do that for me, so its going down the road. I am headed for the woods and will be putting it up for sale on numerous web sites in a few weeks.

I would be interested in tinkering with that setup

Man if I was looking for a 7mm STW I would be all over this one like a bum on a bologna sandwich.

You calling me a bum? Cause I ate the bologna sandwich. Thanks Elkman! Hope to get it to the range before the snow flies.

Sounds like you got a great deal, hope it works out well for you. It sounds like the gun has the potential to shoot quite well by the sounds of it.

Been busy fitting, bedding and refinishing both stocks.

This tupperware factory stock was pillar bedded with the forearm reinforced with aluminum stock. I opened up the bedding for the oversized recoil lug and then fully rebedded the action and barrel channel. I then aggressively free floated the barrel starting about 2 inches ahead of the lug. I then filled the hollow butt stock with silicone compound to add some weight and to shift the balance of the stock towards the butt. Sanded and painted the stock with a base coat of Krylon camo followed by a light coat of Krylon make it stone. I knocked some of the texture down with sandpaper and then clear coated the whole thing. Not sure I am too fond of the color at this point, might change it later this winter. Installed a Limbsaver recoil pad to finish it off. Rifle balances close to center of action and the final weight with scope was 10.4 pounds.

I have it wearing an old Burris Signature 3x9 for now. Shopping for a good Christmas special on a long range scope.

The wood stock was also opened up and rebedded. Have it in the process of being refinished. How many more coats of oil is it going to take???

If the weather holds this weekend, I will be at the range working up 160g Accubonds over IMR 7828 and Retumbo. Wish me luck...

Looks like that bologna sandwich tasted pretty dang good, looks sweet ksubuck. From the guys I know who have the 7mm STW retumbo will be your huckle berry

Looking very sweet. I've had excellent results with H1000 in the 7 STW and very good results with Retumbo when using 160 grain AB.

Made it to the range to start some load development this afternoon. Just starting out with the 160 AccuBond and IMR 7828 show that this rig is tight. Definitely the second most accurate rifle in my safe, and likely the most accuracy potential.

Started at Nosler minimum and worked up.

First group...

Fifth group...

And sixth group...

The last group was rushed as the range was closing. I will always wonder if it would have been a bughole if I gave the barrel a chance to cool...

Anyway, many, many thanks to Elkman for passing this new toy on to me. I am thinking it may have to go to Kansas on a deer hunt soon.

There is nothing wrong with those groups! Your rifle is singing a sweet song for you. Yeah, that'd do for a KS hunt. It never ceases to amaze me how KS has grown such big bucks. There were no hunting opportunities when I was growing up there. I'm pleased for my natal state.

I hear you about Kansas. It moved there in 1999. It took me until 2007 to convince my best friend from Ohio to come out for a hunt. He always doubted my stories and felt nothing could be as big as a good Ohio buck.

Here is the deer he took 30 minutes into opening day of our 07 Kansas hunt

Its hard to get him to rifle hunt deer anymore. He says it isn't fun because he will never shoot another one like that in his life

I took a nice little 7x8 about 10 minutes before he got that moose. I was all proud until I saw his deer
