After several months of seeing this hawk at the local city park - and the evidence of bird kills... I finally got some decent photos. I thought it was a Cooper's Hawk but the good folks at the Ornithological Society (that's a really big word for a Marine BTW) have informed me that it's a Red Shouldered Hawk. They look similar. Apparently they dine on other birds primarily but sometimes take small rodents.

Beautiful bird and a great picture Guy.
We don't have these birds here but we do have Red Tailed hawks.
I truly appreciate all the birds of prey.

Beautiful shot. Very similar to a Cooper. Really like those "smaller" raptors. We even get them occ. in the big city here in MN. Always hope they can work on the rabbit population, but I expect thats a bit big for a cooper. Kinda comical watching a red tail try and launch from a lilac bush, seen that once or twice. CL

Great pic my brother. In SC we have two permanent hawks, Red-Tail and Red Shoulder, however we have other species at different times of the year. We also have Broad-winged Hawk, and the Swainson's and Rough-legged Hawks, they are rare but regular Winter visitors.
