So I have been reloading for a short time and have experienced moderate success. I have primarily been using H4831sc. Is there a "best" powder or others I should try for my rifle? It is a Factory Ruger M77.

I am loading 160 gr AB, Partition, and 162 gr SST. So far I have my best groups with the SST's.

The SST is a good bullet, as is both the AB and PT. In one of my earlier 7RMs, the SST provided me with wonderful groups. H4831 and H4831SC are good powders; I've used these powders primarily with lighter bullets. For 160-162 grain bullets, I had very good success with RL22, RL25 and VN165. Other powders I used that gave me good success in that weight of bullet was MagPro. Recently, I had some fine groups with H100V.

I've had good success with H-1000 with 160 gr bullets. Retumbo has worked best for me with 175s. And I can't find any powder that works better than Reloder 22 for 140gr bullets.

Thank you guy's, I will try a few of them.

Is there a rule of thumb that this caliber likes hotter loads, etc? Or do you start at the minimum and work your way up .5 grains or so at a time? Where do you guy's start typically?

I always start five to ten percent below maximum anticipated charge. On a cartridge such as this (over sixty grains of charge), 1.5 and even two grain increments will give me a lot of information. I can fine tune the load once I'm in the general vicinity of the highest degree of accuracy. The powder/primer/bullet combination will inform you as to ideal charge. Generally speaking, slower powders perform best as they approach maximum charge.

I start at book min on any cartridge and I work up in .5 gr increments. Now some of the larger calibers you might get away with 1 gr increases but I don't like to push my luck. You will find that there can be 2 or 3 nodes in which harmonics in the barrel may greatly increase or decrease your accuracy. Generally I shoot a ladder looking for pressure. You will find that you will find a place where the vertical string may stop or be very tight this is a good place to look for an accurate load.

66 gr of rl 22 with any 160

72.5 H1000 same bullet weight

work up to both

Anyone use R19 with 160g accubonds?

I'm working up loads right now with it and have been pleased with the results to date. Nosler shows pretty impressive velocity with R19. Just not sure why it doesn't get much mention.

ReLoder 19 and 160 grain ABs work well in my 7RM. That particular propellant has worked equally well with the discontinued 160 grain Fail Safes, as well.

nvbroncrider,

What do you mean you shoot a ladder? Do you mean not shoot for groups but shoot a single shot of each increment at the same bulleye? This in theory would show an impact point for each increment slightly higher than the last? I think this method would cut down on spent bullets and powder.

I use 66.0 grains of IMR 7828 SSC and a Federal 215 Mag match primer with W-W brass and 160 Partition bullets. I weigh and sort each bullet. Groups are typically in the 3/4 to 7/8 inch range.

We are loading 160gr ABs over top of 60 grs of IMR-4350 speed is just over 3000fps. I recently tried a couple of shells loaded with RL-22 powder and they registered over 100fps faster on the chrony. I will be trying a new powder next loading sessions

Blessings,
Dan

Dan, same load that I used to use in my 7 mag (the 60./4350). I use 66 .0 of IMR 7828 SSC now and get about 150 fps faster but mit der sturm und drang (re Fotis' post)!

So another question for my 7mm RM. I am currently using Win WLRM primers.

How much will other primers change a load typically? Are certain brands hotter than others? Which ones would you recommend with the Retumbo, H1000, or RL22?

You will have to try them to see what your rifle/load likes the best. WRM is the hottest and Federal GM215M is always a good choice. CCI also makes a good primer too.

I am using the Win. currently with no pressure signs. I will try the CCI and Fed. in my better loads and see if any thing changes. Thanks!
