Reloading for the 7mm Rem Mag.

I have been using the Fed 215 Mag Match in the 7mm Rem Mag and the .340 Weatherby with good results in both accuracy and velocity. They are hotter than some other brands, so drop loads a little to change primers.

I see lots of loads mentioned on here for the 7 RM. Most of them list the federal 215M. That is what brought me to ask about primers. I will try them next and see what happens.

Remember to back your loads off before changing primers as they may cause a load that is light to become hot in a heartbeat.

I really haven't played with changing primers but I beileve 5-10%. Mike or someone will jump on and set you straight.

Depending on how hot your load is, 5 to 10% will work about right. I normally drop back five percent and work from there. Only once did I get a big surprise, and it was a big one. Had I dropped back less, I would have been wearing a .356 around my head.

61g rl22 with a 162 amax/sst shoots under MOA at 2850fps.

69g retumbo with 162 sst shoots under MOA at 2900fps.

Have had few 7 mags and I never could seem to get the accuracy over 2900fps with 160s with any of the better typical 7 mag powders.

I use CCI250s and winchester or remington cases. Use to use fed215s but they became like gold around here so I made the switch to CCI to solve that problem. They work just as good. Primers a primer really. You can try different ones if you want, but its usually one of last things I do when working with a load.

I just worked up a batch of this combo:

All loads were Remington Brass, once fired.

160 grain accubonds
Fed 215 Match primers
58.5 grain of IMR 4350
3.290" OAL

Worked wonderful in a rifle just like yours. Recoil was a little less than a 20 year old factory remington Core-Lockt

165 grain Interbond
Fed 215 Mach Primers
69 grains Retumbo
3.290" OAL

This load kicks like a mule in the same rifle. No signs of pressure, but groups were a little tighter at 200 yards.

165 grain Interbond
Fed 215 Match primers
68 grains retumbo
3.290" OAL

Still kicks like a mule, but groups were about the same as the 160 AB/IMR combo.

I am going to try the 160 AB/Retumbo combo next..

Has anyone tried the Rem 9 1/2 Mag. primers? My records show the smallest groups and the best velocity when used in my blued 700 Remington, and recently in a new stainless version. Cases are Remington and RL22 is the powder.

I use (and have used for many years) Remington 9.5M primers in a variety of cartridges. In fact, in my recent work with my 9.3X64 Brenneke, the primer is R9.5M. They are "cooler" than others, but they assuredly will ignite the powder column.

Years ago, my favorite powder in the 7RM was IMR4350. I would load it up to where I could see Elvis in the scope when it fired, then drop the powder charge one grain from there    !

I can't say I've ever seen Elvis in the scope. There has been a time of two i managed a few bird songs.

I tried 7828 in my last 7 mag which was a 700 bdl custom deluxe and it did ok with 162 amaxs. Not great in either velocity or accuracy over IMR4350 or H1000. I stuck with H1000 which was giving consistent sub 1/2 MOA with 162 amax at 2900fps.

I need to tinker around a bit more and decide on what bullet I really want to go with out of this winchester model 70...Its got a shorter mag box then the 700 and I cant load out to lands with the amax and still use as a repeater which is a bit bothersome, on top of that, the amax is strictly a long range bullet and I would need to work up a load for a stouter bullet for the brush and timber or up close shots as well.

Original plan was to go with the 162 amax for 300+ and 160 partitions for the closer stuff...

Thinking now I may just play with the 162 sst and hope it does consistent 1/2-3/4 MOA and solve most my problems and worries about being able to use as a repeater and having 2 different loads. The 162 SST is pretty much identical to the 160 AB with a bit higher BC and about half the price. Milk jug tests at 25 yards showed they penetrated and held up every bit as good as the AB so they are a great all around 7mm bullet at 7 Rem mag velocities anyway.

What primer did you lite the IMR 7828 SSC with? I have been using Fed 215 Mag Match and they do the job, plus I get about 100 fps+ over any supposed equaivalent IMR 4350 loads in the 7mm Rem Mag. Without a hot primer, this powder won't be at its best.

I was using CCI250s

I don't use federals anymore because I could never get them and it was a pain. Just started going strictly with the CCI250 for all my magnum needs. They worked really well in my 338 EDGE burning 90+ grains of powder so I don't believe its a primer choice issue. Have worked equally as well in my 7 mags and 264 mag.

Don't know how "hot" the CCI250 is compared to others, but if it'll ignite 90g of powder in 0 degree weather I'm not least bit worried with it igniting 70g of powder in a 7 mag.

The CCI250 is a reasonably "hot" primer that has worked well in cold weather for me. To add to Charlie's point concerning the magnum primers, they will assuredly add velocity to most loads; they do so through increased pressure. I take it that this is indicative of more complete ignition throughout the powder column before significant movement of the bullet through the barrel.
