Is it possible to change a 338 RUM to Lapua?? I realize the barrel may have to be moved forward a couple threads, and the bolt face opened up. Is it possible to reuse the orignial barrel?? I ordered a 338 RUM(still waiting), but have found a supply of cheap Lapua brass.

Its feasible, Remington offers a M700 in the 338 Lapua but I question if its really worth the effort. I have never had any issues with 338 RUM brass and I have a load that pushes the 250 gr PT at 3024 fps avg with low ES and SD.

take a look at 24hourcampfire- there is a conversion of a Remy 700 with a Sendero stock, changed the magazine(7) rounds of Lapua(detachable).
Very nice rifle indeed.

I ordered the 338 RUM, but have found brass for a lapua @ $1/case, which is very cheap for 338 lapua brass. Brass cost was the reason I went with the RUM, but if I can get the lapua brass for that price why not. It wouldn't be an everyday shooter anyway, 100 pieces of brass would last awhile. However, I'm not sure that the savings on the brass would merit reworking a new rifle. Might have to perhaps aquire the brass and wait to get or build what I want. Perhaps I'll find a donor action somewhere. The SPS 700's are alot cheaper for a donor than a new 700 XCR, the price difference would buy a new mike rock, kreiger or lawton barrel. ALL great barrels for big 338's.

Was just a thought, probably not a great plan. THanks for the info.

I have a 338 Lapua that was converted from a Weatherby, hardly helps with the question about using a Remington 700. The only advantage I can see between the 338 RUM and the 338 Lapua is the Lapua brass. I have all but given up counting the number of reloads on my current 20 pieces of brass.

If you get the brass make sure it is indeed LAPUA made 338 lapua brass and not Norma made lapua brass. The Norma made stuff is soft and won't last anywhere near the Lapua made brass will.

jtoews80,

How about just having your barrel reamed a little and fireforming Remington brass to get a few more grains. The difference would be about the same as the 338 edge which seems to be getting really popular. I think the regular 338 RUM is one hell of cartridge but if more is what you need there seems to be many interesting ways to achieve that. The 338 Ultra mag and relative cartridges seem to be becoming really popular.

The 338-300 Ultra or 338 Edge is a great round, I was actually thinking of trying to neck up and squeeze the shoulders on some 300 RUM brass I have lying around before removing the barrel on a new rifle.

Seems to me that it would be a shame to remove the barrel without going the whole route with accurizing as well. I haven't the money or time this year to square bolt lugs and true up the action before reinstalling the rechambered action.

It occured to me that if I just leave this thing stock I'll still have a Elk slaying hammer that is nice and light, very weather resistant and still capable of 500-600 yd kills on Moose and Elk if I have a load worked up in time. I may just have to buy 50 rnds to see what it will do stock. Sure would be nice if Nosler made 338 Ultra brass tho..... Must we beg!!!

Oh yeah there is the 3-6month wait we canucks have with most good smiths and it's usually a year round trip to the US for a rifle to have work done and a full time job thro the wait filing out paperwork.

Man, that is the pits, I truly am sorry you guys have to put up with all the paper work and time spent to get things done.

The 338 RUM is a very accurate cartridge, I think you will be happy with it.
My M700 LSS is a tack driver shooting under .5 MOA with all bullet weights.
Let me know if you need load date, I have it for all the bullet weights in 338.
