Does anyone have any experience with the Browning TI (Titaniam) mountain rifle? I understand they don't make them anymore but they look interesting at 5 1/2 lbs.

I have an original Ti in 30/06 in a Brown Precision stock. Mine has a VX2 2-7x33 in Talley Lightweights, PTG aluminum pin and shroud, and aluminum trigger guard.

Mine is 5lbs 4oz without scope/rings and just a shade over 6lbs ready to roll. The barrel heats up quick but it's a hunting rifle and mine does good for 3 shots. Here is the 1st and only load I tried from mine:

165gr
H4831 - 62grs
WW Brass
CCI200

2750fps - not the fastest but it'll do. :)

1st 3 shot group from the rifle, rounds 1 and 2 are in the top hole:

I would love to have one in .260 Rem or 7-08 Rem.

Greg, I've got an original TI in 7-08. Weight is 5 1/4lbs. With a VXIII 2X8, lightweight mounts and a full magazine weight was 6 1/2lbs. Using 140 grain sierras with H4895 and Win large rifle primers Groups were consistently under 1 inch. Everything on the rifle is original, never had any problems and the rifle when I purchased it new approximately 13 or 14 years ago cost me 960.00. I know what they were going for when they were discontinued so if you can find one for a reasonable price grab it.

Sorry Greg, my mind went haywire for a couple of minutes. I have an original Remington. I'm sure their isn't much diference between the two.

Greg,

I love lightweight rifles. Both Remington and Browning have made titanium rifles. I want a remington but they seem to go for $1500-$2000. I did fondle a Christensen Arms rifle built on a Browning ti action. It was a 300wsm with a muzzle brake. I went home to think about it for 5 days and it was gone. Maybe next time? I always want a lightweight rifle ready for that next sheep or goat hunt. I am building preference points in 5 states so hope to hunt sheep again before I collect Social Security! Brian

I believe that Kimber makes production hunting rifles in the 5 lb class. It would be easier than finding a Rem Ti and may be no more expensive either. Kimber's have a reputation for out-of-the-box accuracy.

Just a thought for anyone looking for a LW hunting rifle.

Browning or remington?

Now Heath, that is a light rifle and that is good shooting. Should really be nice on a long day of humping up and down the mountains.

Yeah, those Kimber Montana's are pretty nice as well. Not sure how much more it would weigh, but you could probably restock a Model 70 Featherweight with an McMillan Edge, or a B&C Alaskan for under the amount of money for a Ti and probably be pretty close to what you are wanting as well.

That is a great shooter Heath! Looks like it is ready to roll!

Thanks guys, I am pretty pleased with it. I had never seen a Ti other than online and one day I was helping Dad work on one of his old cars and he mentioned a friend wanting to sell some guns. We finished up and rode to his house. He pulled out FINE rifle after custom rifle and then out came the Ti. I asked a price, $800 he says, I'll take it I says, and now I own a Ti. It is a great packing rifle, I only used it on a couple of walks last year but man it was pretty sweet. I will probably never get the chance to go west but it's one of the three I have in my mind I would take.

My 700 Ti 30/06, Mark V .300 Wby and my Model 70 7wsm would be making the journey.

I have only seen a few pics of the Browning Ti's, not real sure about any info on them though.

I sold a few of those in years past, Heath. However, I never owned one. You got a fine bargain.

A Kimber Montana is going to run about 6.25lbs, according to the factory specs. If you're interested, I know where two are, slightly used, that might go for $800 or so. Asking price is $899, but I've always been able to deal a little with this shop.

It's not a pretty gun, but I just picked up a Ruger American in 270 win yesterday. It really reminds me of the Colt Light Rifle (Ultralight Arms design) I had a few years back in it's lines and handling. They really took all the excess material away and made a light fast handling rifle. I'm really suprised how slim they made the stock and at how good it feels. The trigger is a knock-off of the Savage accu-trigger and broke cleanly at 3lbs. The dealer I bought it from lives a mile from me, so I dropped off a VXIII 4.5x14 CDS for him to install today and he is also going to turn the trigger down to it's minimum safe weight. I'm pretty curious to get it on the bench after all the accuracy reports I've been hearing. I think Ruger might have to step up the Hawkeye to compete with their cheap rifle. I really like a tang safety on a hunting rifle, especially a mountain rifle. I've had the Remington style slide safety rub into the fire position on my pack several times. That's actually the only reason I got rid of my Colt Light Rifle in the first place. Anyway this might be an option to consider at 6.25lbs in a gun you don't mind beating up. I'll post range results when I get mine tested. Considering temps are staying over 100 degrees it might be a slower process than I'd like.

I've been looking at the prices aren't bad on the used Kimber Montanas. About $800 on up depending on the caliber. The Tikka T3 Lite is about 6 lbs 6oz a good stainless in 300wsm is about $700. Now if I can find one with a muzzle brake and a limbsaver I would be at about 6lbs 15oz with a Leupold ultralight 3-9x33 and I have one spare from the 350 rem. HMMMMMM

Greg, the shop that has the Montanas has a couple in 270WSM, and one in 300WSM. The 300 is priced at $850 and the 270s are priced at $899. I'm betting there's $75-100 or so in room on any of those. They also have a Tikka T3 synthetic in 300WSM priced at $599, which you could probably have shipped for $560 or so. No brakes, but this shop can install brakes (they keep a smith on staff and have braked several rifles for a friend of mine). PM me and I'll get you in touch with them if you're interested. I've done business with these folks for 20yrs, and I've bought by picture over email, so I trust them completely.

Dang, I'd pick up that .300 in a heartbeat... please, please please don't tell me where it is...

:)

Maybe I'll PM you, BK...

I found a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless locally in 300Wsm with a brake. I'm trying to sell those rifles for the bargaining money and trip money. We'll see what's planned for me.

According to Kimber's web site an 84M Montana weighs "just over 5lbs". The 84M in .308 that I handled was surprisingly light even with the 2.5x8 Leupold siting on top of it.
