All last summer I tried to get my 06 to shoot 1" groups and had a hard time. Today was the first time I shot it since deer season. The first 3 shot group measured .4" with 165BT. The problem was the group was 5" high. The last time I shot it it was right on. So I moved it back to 3x and the rounds hit right where I was looking but 2" So from 9x to 3x the group moved 5" up and down. I think I found one of my issues. I have also been reading about crowns and think that mine needs to be redone. So this winter I am going to put a new scope on it and have it recrowned. I hope by next spring, I will have more knowledge of reloading and shooting to get this rifle 1 MOA. It will sit out this hunting season (first time in 19 years) and let the .338 do the work.

Diagnosing the problem is the biggest step in correcting the problem. It sounds as if you are gaining confidence in the rifle. Good luck as you effect the fix.

wisconsinteacher that is good advice and a great deal . If you pick up a Minox it will likely outlive your hunting days.

Blessings,
Dan

Good for you, WI-Teach. A rifle that just won't perform can be a real drag on confidence at the loading bench (ask me how I know) and getting one of those figured out sure feels good (not that I am so familiar with that feeling)!

I have a Minox 3-9 on that pre64 '06 I just got, and a 3-9 Conquest on my other M70 Classic '06. Both are great scopes....and the Minox is such a buy right now, it can't be beat, in my opinion!

WT,

The VX-3 2.5-8x36mm is just about perfect for the 30-06.

Now that I am on a fixed income, retirement budget, the Minox and VX3 Leupolds and Conquests may be the scopes of choice again. That is when my Zeiss Diavari, Swarovski and (2) Kahles scopes wear out, if they wear out. I already have a ZA5 2-10x40 Minox, a VXIII 4.5-14.5x40AO, a VXII 3-9x40 Leupold and a Conquest 2.45-8x32, etc, hanging around on less expensive factory rifles and rimfires.

Eyesight is not getting any better but price practicality rules the day. Even my 3-9x42 Redfield Illuminator from the 1980's is still doing yeoman duty on my .257 Bob. Clear and bright as ever.

Wisconsinteacher......You might want to check out Greg Nolan's Nickon Buckmaster scope that he has listed in the "Classifieds". Great scope for half price of a new one.

Very nice. It is great figure out what the issues are. I 2nd the others, you can't beat the ZA5 or ZA3 Minox's. Very good scopes for the money. I run them on just about all of my serious rifles nowadays.

Another possible replacement scope is the redfield revolution line, good crisp/clear optics and generous eye relief. I used the 4 x 12 x 40 last year and liked it for the $ spent. It has been taken offf the 300 and put on my yote gun as I felt the accu-range reticle may get more use there. The 300 got an upgrade to a leupy mark 4, now I just got to learn to be a dial twister.hahaha but still working on load development.
