Hello.
Here is another Remington issue. haha

I have several 300 WSM rifles but this one Remington XCRII is a PITA.

It closes the bolt too hard on unfired ammo or even unfired new brass.

I have even put just the new brass in no bullet in the chamber by hand and slowly close the bolt and it gets so hard to cam the handle down to the lock postion.

When I pull a fired round out or even the new unfired brass back out...there is a small gouge in the case head.

I have read a lot of issues on this subject over the internet and it seems to be a common problem and on the same note a common fix appears to be a new extractor?

Thanks for your replies

300, see my thread on the extraction problem I had on my Kimber 84M Classic. Your problem could be entirely dissimilar, but you never know.

Doesn't that just frost your buns when you pay that kind of money for something and it won't even work like it's supposed to! What the heck is wrong with running a few Azoom's through it or dummy rounds to check feeding and function?

Not sure about you guys, but stuff like this makes a person nervous about buying anything any more. It sure would be nice if before we put the kind of money we do down on firearms that we could at least fire them with a couple of factory rounds before we make the big purchase to see if they work and if we like how they feel to us. Not sure how we would incorporate that unless a gunstore had an indoor range.

Good luck with it. I'd sure get in touch with Remington. I feel your pain!
David.

Yep - The last Remington I purchased 700 VTR in .223 had the same issue. If you look around the bottom of the case, you'll see where the extractor is set too deep and will remove a small portion of brass each time.

Rather than deal with Remington ( They obviously didn't have the time to do it right the first time - who says they'll do it right the second )??
I gave my to Greg @ Gre-Tan & had him go ahead and bush the firing pin while installing a Sako style extractor. Works great now.......View attachment .223_Bolt_Face.JPGView attachment .223_Sako_Extractor.JPG

I was talking to the guy I bought my .243 and Featherweight '06 from, and he knows of a couple of guys who have had problems with chambering rounds in their XCR IIs... could have been the extractor, but he thought that somehow he XCR coating was seeping into the chamber when it was applied. I dunno, but then he bought an SPS .223 that had extractor issues.

Kinda makes it tough to be a Remington fan lately.

Hey gang.
The people at Remington are about as much help as a traffic cone. They told me to try loaded factory ammo in it to be sure. Well brand new unfired brass doing the same thing??? Just the brass with no bullet. Come on!!!!

OK I learned this much today!!!!! It is 100 percent in the bolt. So I am betting atleast ten dollars it is the extractor.

I did one better than using factory ammo. I took a bolt from a remington SPS 300WSM that I know has no chambering issues. Took some empty cases and placed them in the chamber. Swapped the bolt into mine and wow....chambers and locks the bolt the way it should. We then tried the XCRII bolt in his sps and guess what...now his smooth chambering 700 became an instant bear to close.
So I knocked him out, took his bolt and left him his gun, my bolt, and a note saying how sorry I was. JUST KIDDING.

He did say after his 700 got the hard close situation from my bolt...ummmm give me my bolt back.

HA HA

Now....the hard part!
What to do next? Do I order an extractor from remington or Someone else? Should i send the bolt off? Do it myself? ETC ETC

Thanks everyone!

I wonder if that is why my Remington is so hard to close. Might have to do that. I think you need a special tool for the extractor don't you?

Corey

Does anyone have an extractor part number for this and a source? I would prefer NOT to get one from Remington. Brownells does not have an extractor for a 700 in a WSM caliber. ( .535 case head)
Midway seems a bit lost when i call and ask about one.

Brownells has extractors for the standard large and small calibers.

One way to confirm/eliminate the extractor as the cause would be to grind off a portion of the extractor rim of a good case, then see if the bolt closes normally on it.

Does the serial # of the bolt match the receiver?

Good thinking!

Remind me to not help you in person with any gun projects....

Man, those Remington's are sure kicking butt!

Just kidding with you Green guys. I couldn't help myself.

Hope you get your rifle fixed up, would it be a good time to put a Sako type extractor in there, since your doing the job anyhow? Just wondering.

With Sako extractors usually you have to enlarge the bolt nose cut in the barrel to allow the extractor to swing over the case.

Just wanted to update you on this issue.
I called Remington again and I guess this time I was squeaky enough so they gave me the grease.

Sending me a new extractor and rivet. I'll post the verdict after I install the new one.

Update.....

got the new extractor and rivet from Remington. I didn't install them as I was looking at the bolt face compared to another 700 bolt face of the same caliber and the extractor just looked bigger. So I took a die grinder to the extractor still in the bolt... (very carefully) a little bit and it got better. Kept on going and it what do you know....the rifle now closes the way it should and also does not chew on the case head.

If Remington is going to be selling kit guns they should advertise them as such.

I know there are more Rem owners out there who have the same problems. I'm also sure that most of them are going to be extractor issues

If you are looking for the magnum extractor (riveted type) for the 700 Rem, Midway is part number 327170, plus you have to buy the short magnum rivet, part number 419370. You just got someone who doesn't know how to find stuff at Midway.

Can you post a picture of what you were grinding. Im having the same issue but I'm. It sure what you were grinding on. Thanks

Corey
