This is my first ever .308 and and im looking forward to playing with my new toy. I mainly bought the rifle because the price was right and my son was begging me to buy it, at least thats what i told my wife. :).
I don't have a scope for it yet but have pretty much decided to put a Vortex Diamondback HP 4x16x42 on it. A friend of mine let me borrow an old VX2 3x9x50 for now so I can shoot the rifle and work with some loads. I have a couple boxes of Nosler 125gr BT's and a couple boxes of Sierra 150gr PH's that I want to work with and i'll probably pick up some 165's later to try as well. The rifle will be used mostly to punch paper with because my main hunting rifle is a 25.06 but im sure it will eventually see some time in the field for deer and coyotes. The rifle feels good when shouldered and isn't as heavy as I thought it would be. I hope its a shooter.

Sounds like a good purchase. I can't imagine that you won't find the .308 a pleasure to load for and to shoot.

The LTR is quite a rifle. Several years ago we replaced a traditional 24" heavy-barreled Rem 700 with the 20" fluted barrel LTR, for the regional SWAT team.

There was no loss in accuracy. The rifle was far easier to handle, making it better for both urban and rural operations. And there was surprisingly little loss of velocity/change in trajectory. We were still smacking steel with it out at 600 - 700 yards with it no problem.

A buddy of mine owns one center-fire rifle, a .308 Remington 700 LTR. He's had it about ten years now I'd guess. Deer, bear, elk, moose and more have fallen to that stubby .308 of his.

Link to a great article on handloading for the .308 Win, the article is mostly for target shooters, but there's some hunting info as well:
