Looking at two scopes a Weaver 4x or Burris 1 3/4 x5 power what would you put on a Remington 742 30-06.
The Weaver is the brightest and best image as the Burris has the widest field of view.
Both are 1980’ s Vintage Scopes.
I plan on this being a Black Beer and Timber Rifle where shots will not exceed 300 yards.
What would you mount ?

I'd pic the weaver just cause I think a K-4 Weaver is second only to a 2-8 or 2-7 Leupold as an all around scope. Its also a "looks" thing for me, I think the larger objective bell "looks better" but thats just me. One thought, Which one has the heavier "easier to see" cross hair? Some of those weavers can get pretty thin and harder to see in a brushy back ground. Might be a plus for the Burris? CL

If they are close in low light conditions, I would opt for the 1.75-5x20 for flexibility in different hunting conditions. That said, there is an advantage to using a fixed power, you are never reaching for the power ring when you should be focused on taking the shoot. I also hunt swamps, so I know how long you have to make the choice to shoot some times. I set the power ring on my scope for the conditions I'm hunting in (example on a stand or sneak hunting) and I leave it alone.

I put a 1-4x24 on my Dad’s 742 a couple years ago and one annoyance is on 1x the front sight hogs up some of the sight picture.
If you believe the glass quality is better with the Weaver , that would be the choice.
