Remington or Savage for a starter long range gun?

Congratulations to your brother. The Corps is a great place for young men.

I like the Savage, and I'd tend to lean that direction for my next rifle ... just because.

It sure made a man out of him, and he was needing it. I couldn't be more proud of him!

I just sold my Savage model 12 in the 204. I have been a Remington man all my life but I would never hesitate to buy another Savage as it was as accurate as any Remington I have shot (Just not as pretty  ).
The main reason I sold it was because of the weight and that I use it mostly for yotes.
I purchased the CZ American (lefty)527 in the 204 beautiful rifle.

Blessings,
Dan

Well if it helps you out any I own a Rem 700 SPS in the 22-250 cal. It shoots very well from 100 to 600 yards. All i did was sand out the pressure point in the forearm of the stock.

This is a 600 yard group with my SPS

That is one good looking setup you have there! Looks like it shoots fine as well, thanks for the input.
