Remingtons quality

Get an SPS. Stock is junk, trigger is junk, finish is junk. Barrel will be a shooter! You can replace everything else and make it your own.

If you want a good Remington 700, buy one made in the early 80's

After finding no used 700 rifles for under $450 to build a 222rem on my year long search ended by buying a SPS Stainless in 223rem. Put a B&C medalist stock on it set the trigger pull to 2.75lb and filled the protruding screw on the trigger to glass smooth.

If I do my part it will group about .3" CC at 100 yards with my hand loads.

Oh I think the new SPS was $540 at the time

I wouldn't be too afraid of a new Remington, I think they would take care of you if you had a problem...

I'd be careful about thinking that. When I asked Remington what was "acceptable accuracy" they hemmed and hawed and kept saying the 700 is one of the most accurate rifle platforms in production today. I finally asked a few pointed questions, regarding if they thought 3+ inches at 100yds was acceptable and they told me in no uncertain terms they did not guarantee group size with their rifles and if it functioned correctly and fired correctly it was not likely to be a warranty issue. They did offer to have me ship it back at my expense, let them evaluate it, and provide me with an estimate of what it would cost to have it brought up to a more acceptable standard. Timeline would be guaranteed to be outside 6mo, and potentially longer than a year. I told them to go pound sand.

Dub, that does not sound very "responsive to customer need" to me? In fact, that is hardly responsive at all!

Thanks once again. I am honestly kicking myself for letting that Model 70 Classic CRF 308 barreled action go I found for a steal not long ago. It still haunts me!

Lot's of guys here have had good success with the Winchester rifles and they are good in general, every manufacturer seems to have some duds that sneak out. In general I wouldn't be afraid to own a Remington, or Winchester (other than the fact they aren't making left hand rifles but that's another story) Savage and Tikka would be worthy of your attention.

Interestingly, all ended up in McMillan stocks.

Purple?

Only the '06, and it really looks more blue than purple. The .204 is red/white/blue flame, the .243 is Arctic Camo, and the Weatherby is a tan McSwirley.
