Resizing a 300H&H...

Been doing some research on this for a possible upcoming purchase...

Some say the 300 H&H's case has too shallow an angle to headspace it on the shoulder, thus is must be headspaced on the belt.

Others say it's hogwash and can be headspaced on the shoulder.

ALSO-- is there any way to know if the rifle's chamber has been cut to be a 300 Roy other than firing and 300H&H round and seeing a 300 Roy case come out? I don't know anyone local to me with a 300WBY to try chambering one, which would be my first thought on how to tell.

Thoughts??

All belted magnums headspace on the belt, regardless of what you have heard. You can still partially full length size them, but start with the full length sizing and go from there first.

I would think any reputable gunsmith would mark the gun if he had cut the chamber, but you never know.

Technically speaking, all belted mags headspace on the belt. But, in practice, you can set up your dies such that the shoulder is only bumped back about .001-.002" from fired length and thus in effect headspace on the shoulder. Even with the sloping shoulder of the H&H, it should work.

As for chambers, shine a light in there, Tom. The bee chamber should look markedly different, with the radius shoulder, than the H&H sloped shoulder. Compare it to, say, a standard "angular shoulder" round of your choosing (270Win, 30-06, etc.) to get an idea of what one or the other looks like. Or, you could order some cerrosafe and cast the chamber yourself and know for sure.

I think the others hit everything about sizing, but I think there is enough shoulder there in order to keep it spaced off the shoulder like you do with everything else. I would think it would grow a little more than the average case, but it shouldn't be really bad..

I would think someone could drop you a 300 WBY case in the mail.. Just to be able to check?

Hmmm....I have to check with Robert. He's sending me some 180PT's he snagged at SPS that I could use...maybe he can spare a 300 Bee brass. Dubyam's probably right, though, I bet if I look in there with a good light I can tell.

Tom, if you need a 300'bee case, let me know. When I get back home Friday I'll put a couple of resized cases in the mail. Just PM me your address.

Tom,

Pull the bolt and visually inspect the chamber.
I think you should be able to see the difference between a 300 H&H and a 300 Wby drilling.

The 300 HH will shoulder on the belt.

Get a 300 bee headspace gage or a 300 bee brass and see if you can close the bolt. Make sure the case is new brass or full length resised if previously fired.
