Rifle advice

270= bang flop and itty bitty holes far away. No fuss no muss. So I hear .... Have fun. CL

I have used a .270 Winchester Model 70 as my "deer" gun for almost 50 years. I have killed many deer with that rifle and caliber and would not hesitate to recommend it to a new shooter. Recoil is pretty light with 130 gr bullets and the caliber is very accurate. Good choice!

I would look at a Ruger or the Vangard in a 270. Ruger and Weatherby will stand by their product if any problems arises. I have had repairs done free after 20 years with both. Not so with Remington.

Thompson Center is offering $75 cash back on any Venture rifle purchased now until 12/31/15 and that'll make most of them around $375 not including tax. I had one in .270 Win and it slung pretty much any bullet I shot better than I could pull the trigger. I wasn't as fond of it as my other two .270's though and sold it to a buddy who loves it, and has a few deer and elk under his belt with it. I got the $75 off when I bought it a few years ago and slapped a 4-12X40 Redfield Revolution on it that I picked up and it made a great shooting sub $600 rifle. IIRC I had $575 total in the package rifle, scope, and rings.

So an update to this thread, after reading this discussion I was talking with my Dad and He mentioned that he wanted to give my Son one of his rifles for his pending graduation. So, we went that route for his rifle. It is Dad's .270 saddle gun that he has had his whole life! A family treasure. It is a Remington 700 that he has put a thumbhole stock. Here is a picture of him on his first deer hunt with that very rifle.

Today we took it out with some reloads in preparation for our upcoming Colorado rifle hunt this year. Although a lighter load, this load is proving very accurate!

Thanks again for all of your help!

That is just very neat. What a great thing to keep the rifle in the family.

Yes, that rifle means the world to me. It is the first I ever shot. I am thankful its here to stay!

That ended up working out perfectly, I'm sure he is thrilled to having a gun with so much family history.

Thank you for the update. I love it would the heritage is passed down. Having the 270win in a Remington is a real good start they are accurate & 130gr in the 270win has always shot well in my rifles (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Congrats you upgraded immensely from a $600 gun to a priceless heirloom. I'm sure you will all cherish that remarkable gift for a very long time. Very cool.
