Rimfire....22WMR or 17HMR?

Well, Ive only heard that the 22WMR buks the wind better than the .17 The HMR is supposed to be really accurate. My 22Mag will do better than pictured when I have a better than average day but this is typical at 100 yds.

This si a good day

This is the rifle in a different stock...it is far and away my favorite to shoot. I will stick with the MAG. It was much better medicine on Jacks and varmints when I was a kid than a standard .22. That sold me....not a comparison with the 17 I know but my .02 CL

I have not owned the 22WMR but own a couple of 17 HMRs.
Comments:
Ammo = similar $$
Now what is your intent with this rifle? If it is paper and small critters then the 17 would be fine. If you are after sightly larger then the 22.

Both my son's 17 and mine are Savages and they are very accurate. Lot's of fun to shoot. We stand up spent shot gun shells at 100 yds and knock them over with the 17s off the bench. Like I said "Lots of fun" My son shoots tons of varmint / squirrels each spring with his and just loves it.

A buddy of mine has all 3 (22LR, 22WMR and a 17HMR). He shoots the 17 almost all the time we take out the "little guns".

What I have in mind is a pest gun...from rats up to stray dogs, something quieter than the 243.

I have both~ and like them both.
Between the 2 I like the 17 a lot better. Better accuracy and better ballistics.

Again for my uses.

I've owned both. Now I live and hunt critters where I can shoot something heavier so I got rid of them. For small critters up to fox size the .17 was great. I owned the cheap Savage with the plastic stock and the horrible trigger. It would print groups under 2" at 200 yards on a calm day. Walked a bit in the breeze but so did the .22 mag. The .17 shot a bit flatter.

The .17 ran into trouble with coyotes. Never lost one because of it but some of them covered a lot of real estate with a good hit. The .22 mag hit them a bit harder. Both were good accurate rounds. I think the .17 would have done slightly better with a quality trigger. The 17 was more fun for smacking gophers and pigeons. Tore 'em up good. Little bit less riccochet potential with that hornady vmax bullet also.

Honestly?

If you reload I would get a 17 Hornet and call it a day.

Absolutely

You can launch 20 grain tipped slugs from 2000-3650 fps. The latter requires 10 gains of LILGUN to accomplish. I am sure you can realize the 2K fps with a couple of grains of unique or bullseye!

You can not beat that.

The new .22 WMR with the plastic tipped ammo and the 30 grain bullet has 225 MV and 1450 MV at 100 yards. The 17 HMR has 2550 MV and 1915 velocity at 100 yards. Howver, the .22 WMR has higher bullet energy at the muzzle 337 vs. 245 FP and continues to have higher MV to 100 yards (140 fp vs. 138 fp). Plus, the midrange trajectory of both rounds is 1.3 inches at 100 yards. My .22 WMR is very accurate and shoots well under MOA to 100 yards. Really all this tells me is that they are pretty equivalent except for energy to 100 yards. It think that I would stick with the .22 WMR the I have because it has more energy to 100 yards which is most of the working range for this class of cartridge.

For me, this is a viable alternative varmit round for my .204 Ruger to 100 yards or so. It keeps the neighbors off my back because of the lower noise.

Is is in fact harder on the poor rodents.

I've had a 22 WMR since I've been about 11 years old. It's an old Marlin. Shot coyotes, woodchucks a couple of deer and tons of crows. I used to use the 40 grain Winchester ammo in it when, but recently started using the 32 grain VMax or whatever Remington loads. It is REALLY accurate. My son has a 17 and loves it. Both of them are two peas in a pod for their intended hunting. For me at least.

I'm still not sure which way to go...

If I could find a Winchester lever action in 22 mag I'd jump all over it...short of that, I'll just wait and see what pops up I guess.

I may even get a 204....

I really like the Winchester discontinued lever .22 WMR rifle. I still do not kno why USRAC discontinued this model. It was one of the best .22 WMR rifles ever made.

I primarily use my .204 on varmints due to the long ranges present. Its my favorite gun to shoot.

Henry also makes a lever .22 WMR and its very reasonably priced too.
