Saw two, shot same! With my favorite rifle, the good old Marlin 39A. The 6x Leupold sure helped - and that great shooting 38 grain Federal/American Eagle ammo works great too... Range was 60 - 70 yards, both were taken from sitting, unsupported. Good fun - unless you're a rock chuck!

well done, we have shot a few around here but been holding off for when the pups are out and bigger

I tested an old, and I stress "old," 39A a few months back. It had been recrowned and had some work to get it to feed smoothly. It had belonged to a fellow's grandfather, and he wanted to make it shoot. When I tested it at 40 yards, it shot a variety of ammunitions to 1/4 inch or so. It was quite impressive. Looks like you have a similar fine shooting rifle. Maybe I'll need to look around for one of the old mounties.

Hmmm. I've never eaten one. Killed a mess of 'em over the past 40 years, but just fed the coyotes and hawks with the carcasses... The orchard owner and the rancher appreciate me getting rid of some of these pests for them. They tunnel into the orchard and cause some problems. Also eat a small mountain of alfalfa if left unchecked.

Mostly I just like to shoot 'em.

How do you cook rock chucks? Are they any good?

You can tell I am a Southern boy and we will eat just about anything we shoot or at least try it once.

They are wonderful .... for the Coyotes.

Many years ago when I was a kid our family doctor told my father there was only one way to cook cabbage. You boil it in water for 30 minutes, drain off and rfeplace the water, boil them for 30 more minutes, drain off and replace the water and boil them for 30 more minutes. Then you feed them to the hogs and hope you get some good hams. Apparently he did not like cabbage. I feel the same way about rock chucks. If you are going to leave for the Coyotes you may want to cook them first. Just kidding.

I love cabbage!

I make it stuffed (Greek style) with rice and ground up meat.

If you like rabbit or squrrel, Ground hog (rockchuck, whistlepig, etc) are just as good or better. Especially the young ones such as those 2. remember, they are vegitarians, and lead a pretty clean life. Just fry them or cook as you would the rabbit or tree rat. If it is an old one, you may have to parboil it but don't feed it to the hogs.

I would assume Rock Chuck would taste ok. I've eaten squirrel, rabbit, gopher(when I was 10), and beaver. The only one that wasn't good was beaver. That may have been because it was a spring shot beaver and had eaten poplar bark all winter. Coupled with swimming around under the ice in a realatively small habitat, that can't absorb thier feces that quickly. Tasted like a poplar branch.

JT.

Nice lookin' toy there, Guy! Twin to mine. I have a 3x9 on mine, and it likes the 40 grain Winchester solids, but the gophers don't!
