When did it become appropriate? Bought 2 boxes of Win. white box fmj's two different lot #'s for a friend that doesn't reload and needed some plinking ammo. Box boxes have a roll crimp. Don't think I'll give them to her. I sent Win. customer support an email but seeing as it's the weekend pobably won't here back for a few days.

Unfortunately, you got a BS answer from Winchester. The SAAMI specification for .40 S&W does not call for a roll crimp. Take a look at the SAAMI drawing:

Everything I've ever read stated that applying a roll crimp to a bullet that has no cannelure will deform the jacket and affect accuracy. I apply a very light taper crimp of about .002 to my reloads.

I'd be more concerned about headspace issues on a case that headspaces on the mouth, like the 40. Winnie is FOS on this one. If you have a fired case you can use, size it to just fit over the existing bullet, and measure the factory round case length. I bet it's short due to the roll. Knuckleheads!

If the crimp is applied correctly either will work ok.. Taper is what is called for.
