Ruger #1 hanger clearance

G'day,

Just about every thread on Ruger # 1 accuracy has something about the tension wedges, Hicks accurizers, drilling & tapping forearm - and so on and so forth.

Just pulled the forearm off of my Ruger # 1 - there's heaps of clearance between the hanger and the barrel, I haven't measured it but maybe 4-5mm and it's clear all the way to the receiver.

How are they normally? All the pictures seem to show the hanger touching the barrel to some degree and the info suggests that this is the norm. I'm getting the impression that the hanger itself sometimes exerts pressure on the barrel?

The forearm itself is well and truly exerting pressure on the barrel though.

Regards,
Dicko.

Before we get into this, how does your rifle perform from an accuracy standpoint?

G'day POP,

Let's just say the vertical stringing is substantial! Horizontal spread of the groups is quite fine.

Would bedding the hanger and floating the barrel be my first option?

Dicko.

From my experience all the hangars touch the barrel in my #1's. Usually a small wedge between them (of varying sizes---gotta try several) will fix the problem.

Shoot and adjust.....

POP,

Mine has at least 5mm of clearance - I haven't measured it however there is heaps of room and it's not touching anywhere at all back to the receiver.

Dicko.

Get a 6mm washer and install. A little up pressure might do it good! Should help curb the extra vibrations and dampen the harmonics a little.
