Just walked out of a local pawn shop with a nice, 98%, Sako AV in 30-06; I offered them $450 and they bit! Rifle is super nice, just a few handling marks on the stock, metal is pristine , I'm jazzed! I had been looking for a nice Remington 700, and was surprised to find this baby. I am all set up for 30-06 ( well, I "have" been since I was 16!) I really like the Nosler 200 PT as a heavy, but admittedly have used loaded everything from 125s to 240s! I have bookoo brass and bullets, I just have to find some medium Sako rings to fit these bases now, have a nicer recoil pad put on, pillar bedded, etc. I am jazzed!

Nice find! Sako builds wonderful rifles. I think I would rather prefer a Sako to a Remington (newer ones at least).

Bonus! You scored a win with that. Congratulations. Are you leaving it chambered as is; or will this receive some upgrading to another chambering?

Sako's are the bomb. I have owned three of them and they are very accurate and well made. I have a Sako 85 in .338 Federal and think it is a great rifle.

Very nice. That's a rifle I couldn't have passed up for 450 either! Very cool!

Thanks guys, I'm leaving it in '06. I had drooled over a Kimber Montana 280AI and a Mod 70 Extreme Weather 338 but for $1280 and $999 respectively I "dried up" pretty quick! ha. I had sold my pristine Mod 700 Mountain Rifle in '06 months back. I really wanted a sporter weight barrel, preferably a nice used Mod 700 ADL, Classic, BDL but just wasn't seeing anything. I was surprised to even see a used Sako, especially listed at $500. I just had to offer less, ha. Got to remember to get my camera repaired!

filmjunkie ( I am too btw!) I like to work up loads with everything from the 125 to the Woodleigh 240s I have in any '06. I'm one of those preachers who doesn't golf, fish ( I take my grandson a few times ) and handloading/shooting/hunting is my only vice! Over the years, I've found a few parameters for accurate loads that seem to work in any '06 I've had. Of course, now we have newer powders and sleeker hunting bullets to play with. I like the Nosler 125s for coyotes/varmints and I have a friend who used them on mulies. I like Varget for it. IMR 4350 and H4350 have always worked for me for everything, but seems I've rediscovered IMR 4064 for the 150s ( I'm nostalgic anyhow, love Old School right alongside High Tech!) I prefer H4350 with 165-168 TSX, in past decade I tend to use R22 with 180s and especially with the Nosler 200PT. I've had two 30-06 Ackley Improveds and never found them to significantly beat the standard, not worth the time/trouble for me. I've had just some 300 mags, from the WSM to the RUM. While I love them on heavier game ( I've been blessed and had opportunities to hunt plains game in Namibia and South Africa 4 times; used 35 Whelen AI, 300 Winmag, 340W, 375 H&H and I idn't kill anyhin I coundn't hav with the right bullet in an '06!), I find the '06 works better for me for deer and the occasional elk, more fun to shoot at the range. I would like to thump an elk up in the timber with that 240 Woodleigh just for grins! You notice that "really good" factory ammo is available now, just about everywhere, and that's nice to have that option. My dad fought the Japanese with a 1917 Enfield mostly, occasionally a M1 Carbine and they had a Thompson in the team ( they supplied commo for the airstrips after an island was taken, he fought the hold outs and stragglers, he called them.) He felt he 30-30 as the "big gun" for deer/hog and said the '06 was "just not needed and ruined too much meat", ha He never forgot the Great Depression, didn't want any wasted meat! ha

Preacher - Sounds like you know your business where hunting is concerned. As stated in another thread, i got my start with an old .300 Savage. And while I don't view that gun as a "giant killer" I feel like 90 percent of the game I have taken in my nearly 20 years of big game hunting could have been taken with that old gun and round.

I love the .30-06, to me it is just enough power. I have owned several magnums, a couple of them over .30 caliber. While the biggest thing I will see is elk or moose (rather than bear or african game) I feel like a .30-06 with a good 150 or 165 grain bullet is the biggest you would need.

I use a .25-06 with a 100 grain bullet for most everything in open country and if I need more gun I go to the .30-06. Maybe its not the most glamorous, nor is it winning all of the speed and paper-punching contests but for me, its "just right."

As I side note, 4350 has been my "go to" for years now though I have used H380 and 414 as well as 4064 with lighter weight bullets. I used to load a 180 grainer for everything but prefer the lighter recoil of the 150-165 grain bullets. With the good quality premium bullets we have these days, there is no danger in dropping down a couple of notches in weight. Especially where deer are the most likely game with the occasional elk and moose thrown in.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures friend.

And again, I envy you (not quite coveting ;) ) for getting such a great deal. This will be a great rifle I am confident. Don't rechamber, you have everything you'll need.

Preacher,

I think I saw your picture in the Post Office. Grand riflement or some such crime. :)

No doubt you stole that rifle. So, in the interest of burying the evidence I am willing to take that rifle from you for a modest fee and provide you with an alibi. I can hook you up with a plastic surgeon in Mexico for some cosmetic work to hide in plain sight.

Think it over but don't take too long. Johnny Law is hot on your tail.

In all seriousness, congratulations. I trust you will shoot that rifle like you stole it. I am in hopes that it shoots as well as any rifle you have if not better.

Preacher I think you will be safe as long as the bandana didn't fall down 8) . That is great find congratulations!!!

I think a 30-06 would be a decent amount of fun for me at this point. I've had and shot a decent number of rifles, so it might be some fun to monkey around with one, especially with the newer powders and bullets that are available. I'm sorta scared I'd just stuff it with some 4350 and a 165 and be done too fast!

The 30-06 is never a mistake. Col. T. Whelen. Guess that's why I have so many. Seems like with the .270 and 30-06, when a good deal shows up I just have to grab it. I found an early Husqvarna barreled action in 30-06 a while back that has never been drilled and tapped for a scope. I'm seriously thinking of having it rebarreled with a 24" 1 in 10" twist barrel. According to the Speer #9 those Husky's came with a 1 in 12" twist. I already have a custom 24" 1 in 12" 30-06 and it does not like 180 gr. Spitzer bullets. I did take my elk with the slower twist rifle this year but really wasn't all that comfortable with the 165 gr. bullet although it did a great job. Wish I could have recovered the bullet.

This rifle has a 1/11" twist, never had an '06 slower than 10". No biggy.

You know your going to have to pray for forgiveness of your sin.
Nice pick up.
