Jeeze, I see a 35 Whelen build there with the 270 action, that 358 Winchester is just cool. Way outta my price range but awesome. I've thought about a 358 in a M70 would be sweet. My be a little cheaper to buy a 308 FWT and just have it rebarred though.

That magnum M70 action would be something awesome for a 358 STA or 358 RUM though.

Why am I getting singled out on this? You guys are too darned kind. Scotty

Maybe they realize that I will buy stuff I don't need without anybody pushing me?

That's what I was thinking Kurt! I'm so full of great rifles right now I don't even have an inkling for anything, other than a M71 348 Win. That is what I set out to get at the beginning of this year and I still don't have it. Guess it gives me something to look forward to for next year. Scotty

Well that pre-64 in .308 is also a long action standard bolt face isn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong but before the change they pretty much only made one. How about the little hornet? That's just way cool. I think I'm going to give in and buy one for another project before the first is done. Maybe a 338-06 AI?? That would be way cool!! Even though they came out with that new whelen AB bullet.

I am still waiting to see a 35 Whelen AI. I have a feeling if I ever built a Whelen, I would do it, just outta coolness principle! Starting to be a heap of great bullets for the 35's. Glad Nosler is head of the pack in it.

Although, the 338-06AI is a really cool cartridge too. Scotty

I think that if I were to build on an '06 action, Mauser/M70/CRF Ruger, I might give a thought to a .375 Whelen as well.

Another very cool one, along with the 400 Whelen. Heck, those Hawk cartridges look pretty nice as well. Scotty

Kurt,
I just picked up a donor Mod. 70 CRF in 300 win and I'm leaning real hard towards building a 375 Ruger off of it. I've got the action, stock and trigger just need to send out for the barrel.

Scott

You gentlemen are tough on a guy. Posting all those pretty pictures of your M70 on here I think I'm gonna just bite the bullet and get one. I already got a barrel on order so I could change it for the Winchester. Maybe .280AI or .338-06AI or .35Whelen AI I don't know too many decisions. Pretty soon I'm gonna have a safe full of actions to build on!!

I'm think I'd have to go 338 ballistically they are nearly twins. With slightly different terminal due to caliber. But I think the 338 may be more rounded. How much would you gain on those by AI them? The same 100fps?

Not sure of the gains, probably pretty dependent on barrel length and such, but 75-100 FPS should be about the norm. Not sure though. With hunting weight bullets, there is nothing that deters me from thinking the 338 vs the 35 are about the same. 225's at .450 (338) vs .420 (358) and 250's at .473 (338) vs .446 (358). SD's are pretty similar as well. With a new 200 premium in the mix, it makes it that much more suitable for a 35. I have the 338WM and like it alot, but the 35's are cooler.. Really, they are the same, just have a 35 tick.. I don't see one having tons more options above the other. I do love the larger frontal area of the 35's. Might not amount to much, but its there and has impressed me for a few years now. Scotty

Biggest thing for me is not having to trim cases as often, and in the Whelen, potentially better headspace. Any velocity gains are icing on the cake.

I know a few of you guys check out 24hourcampfire and are familiar with John Barsness. He isn't a big fan of most Ackley Improved rounds and he even called the 35 Whelen AI the most useless of them  since there isn't much shoulder improve.

Scotty, clearly you "need" to rebarrel your 338 WM to something like a 358 Norma and then buy a round like a 338 Rum so you can use those new 300 gr Accubonds

P.S. I'm glad you have such a good sense of humor.

Thanks Gerry! I try.....

I have thought alot about having the 338WM rebarreled, but I don't have the heart. It shoots really well, handles bullets up to 275gr's pretty well and has a bunch of family history behind it too. I think it will stay as is. The Norma is a great round and may be a builder in the future. Right now I will suffer with my little old 338. Scotty

I enjoy reading your posts Scotty, I'm like you and would own a zillion guns if I had lots of money :)
Anyone know if the standard 338 Win Mag would be able to handle the long 300 gr AccuBond and what kind of speed could you get out of it? That bullet would penetrate like crazy in a 338 WM.

Gerry, I would bet you could do 2400 out of a 338WM with a 300gr bullet. Just a hunch, but I did 2650 with the Speer 275 Semi Spitzer pretty easily with RL22. There are some Woodleigh RN's at 300gr's which would be fun as well.

Glad to have another buddy in the nuttiness! Scotty

Scotty, don't let these guys warp your thoughts anymore on the .338 Win Mag. You got a good rifle with a solidly made aftermarket stock that shoots well and will kill most anything in its tracks, that you will ever shoot with it. I would still have a .338 WM if I had not bought the Weatherby .340. No flies on the .338 WM.
