Ordered it from CMP on 5/14.
Got it yesterday via FedEx straight to my office.

Springfield Armory receiver, new Criterion barrel.

Guess I better get some 06 ammo loaded this week

Oh and Creedmore didn't have anything to with this.

Very nice. I'm officially jealous. Can't get those living in Canada. That will be a real prize, Howard.

Jeeze Howard, that thing is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Man, I would think it should shoot like crazy too... I could see myself liking one of those old battle rifles!

Thanks Gents.
Scotty that is what's called a CMP special.
Basically a GI receiver that all the internals have been gone through, new barrel installed.
They refinish everything and put new walnut stocks on them.
A little over $1k for a basically new Garand.

I've been watching various websites and the issued, re-arsenalled rifles with scars in the wood, metal and finish are selling for about what I've got in this one.
I've wanted one of these for about ten years now.
Bet it sees a some time in a deer stand this year too .

What a classic rifle and important piece of history. Just need an O3-A3 Springfield now to keep it company!!

I hear ya.
And yes an M1A is on the list too

Don't scream too load guys but back in the 70s I bought an original Winchester Sniper issue drilled on the side for scope mount with Redfield target sights for $150. A Army Colonel was going to Germany and couldn't take it with him so he put it on consignment I saw it and bought it. Shot for a while and hunted with it and boy was it heavy. I traded it for an out board motor that I needed for my boat.

I've got one of those, they are good shooters. I have a few others too, the one I was shooting today was a SA field grade with a 5 Throat and 4 Muzzle, it still wacks the 400 yard ram pretty easily.

Watch SPS for the CC 155/168 blems and stock up, they are perfect for these guns. 45 or so grains of 4064, 4895, or Varget and you'll be putting some decent groups downrange.

Nice. I got an HRA special grade a few years ago. I use a 150gr bullet, over 48gr of W748, with a CCI 250 primer. Its safe on the gun and I have shot some impressive groups with it.

The Garand got a little refinish this weekend.
Couple of coats of Tru-Oil on her now.
( Didn't take long to dry in 105 degree heat either )
Stock turned out beautiful with the gloss finish but it didn't look right all shiny.
Knocked the gloss off with some 000 steel wool.

I really like what you've done with that fine old rifle, Howard. Great job.

Thank Scotty and DrMike.

I just pulled her out of the safe to fondle her once again.
It's a fine rifle and a helluva piece of history.

For me this rifle is a symbol.
A labor of love.

My dad was an officer in the 101st and trained on this rifle.
Told me about it for all of his life.
All it's merits and it's oh so few shortcomings.
Of qualifying with it in OCS all the way out to 1000 yards.

This rifle is a tribute to the man who taught me what it means
To be a Gentleman.
A U.S. soldier.
A man

I lost him almost 15 years ago.
Not a day passes that I don't want to pick up the phone and call him.

He was 'r just my father and mentor.

He was and always will be my best friend.

There is also an 03 Springfield hanging on the wall.
Upstairs over a desk where my powder measures sit.
My grandfather carried it from Okio, to Texas and then to Mexico.
From there at 17 he took it to France.

Wish I'd have met the man I'm named after.
Unfortunately, he died before I was born.

You have a rich heritage, Howard. The knowledge of the strength of character displayed by the generations that preceded you serve to impel you to excel.

Just ran across this post. Glad you didn't blame me for this one (for a change). :p

That's a fine rifle, and its quite a shooter. I was impressed. TruOil looks good!
