Screaming Eagles .300 Savage

Got it. Wonder why they never put pictures? Seems like if your really looking to sell something, a picture would go a long way. Scotty

Got it from my late cousin. It's seen some hard use in it's day. I still haven't shot it, but I think I might when I'm on my Christmas break. I'm thinking about getting it refinished, and the stock has a split in it around the tang that I want to fix.

eta: I have a receiver sight that I swapped FJ4E for that I need to bolt up, too.

Do not fire it until you fix it.

This is the 99's Achilles heel!

Copy that. Thanks, Fotis.

NOPE.....

It can only get worse. Do a search on the net.
Also a LOT of these sold on Gunbroker guns america and others have repaired tangs.

Find a decent gunsmith and get it repaired. If you can not find one let me know......

I just started working with a new smith. He's working on my 7WSM Howa, so if I like his work, maybe I'll see what he thinks about this one.

Do you think it can be repaired, or will it need to be replaced?

Finally got a new card reader. Here ya go Scotty!

The Model 99s are certainly classic rifles, and the 300 Savage was (is) a great cartridge. Good to see this fine old rifle, and in such good shape.

Thanks. I just wish I could do it justice by taking some better pics! Don't know how you guys do it.

Here is a few pictures of my 300 Savage. I think I might have told this story here before... My grandpa bought this rifle in the mid 1950's. He took a lot of deer and elk with it. My dad shot his first deer with it in the mid '50s and I shot my first deer with it in 1982. With any luck, my son will shoot his first deer with it in about 6 years. It's hard to see in the pictures, but it has the cartridge counter on the left side near the front of the reciever. Thanks to this thread, I got it out of the safe for the first time in about 5 years. It hasn't been shot in at least 25 years...probably more. That's so wrong on so many levels! I need to fix that. It's in remarkably great condition considering it is well over 50 years old. Glad to here that there are so many 300 Savage fans around here.

Man, that is a great looking 300 Savage. Your right, it is criminal you haven't given it a good workout! That rifle belongs in the deer woods for sure! Very nice! Scotty

On a side note:
I find it interesting how many of the posts in this thread contain the words "my grandpa bought it" or something like that. I'm obviously not the only one with that great family history in a rifle. Those of us that have that are very lucky.

You aren't kidding. Back where I come from, in the Northeastern woods, the 300 Savage was the epitome of a woods rifle. My grandpa thought it was a lightening launcher and so did many of the others who hunted with him. He had a pretty danged good track record with that rifle. Scotty

BP736,

Another great looking Model 99. Good observation on your part to note the manner in which so many say, "My grandpa bought this..." We need to think about the heritage we are leaving our children and grandchildren.

BP-
That is a great looking rifle. Would like to have one some day in 250-300 of course. Id also need to win the Lotto. A newer one in 308 would be great too. Again, that is a classic, pretty, rifle. Thanks for sharing. CL

I have two 300 savage model 99's in my safe. One is a 95% condition open sight mid 50's, the other has a new 3x9x40 redfield wideview on it. Also mid 50's. My stepson recieved the scoped 99 from my stepdad as an elk rifle. Now he dosn't hunt, so i assume its mine to use. Safe rent space sounds like a good excuse to me. As much as i like the open sight 99 my eyes demand the scope for real hunting.
