In my estimation the perfect rat rifle needs have a lesser report(so as not to scare the ones within 100 yards into their burrows), low recoil(to see the hit in the scope ), easily changed and loaded magazines(to keep the rate of fire up; it's a target rich environment 8), shoot 1/2MOA groups(rats are small targets out at 300yds). I think the 17Hornet is about the best cartridge but both platforms I've tried have left me wanting more. The Ruger 77/17 had the accuracy and the magazine question answered but being a rear lug action it was hard to bed and it's lock up bothered me for some reason. Sent it down the road and am now playing with a CZ527. The 527 is pretty accurate, has the mini mauser action, great single set trigger but the magazine is hard to load and has issues with the rimmed cartridge. So I'm scratching my head to come up with the "perfect" solution. I'm thinking of going to the 17Fireball or the 17x223 and use the Rem7 -Rem700 platform. I've tried the 204 in a heavy varmint but it had to much muzzle blast and recoil. The same for the .223. I might consider going with a suppressor; that would help those issues. I often shoot 300-400 rounds a day and often have to clean the barrel at midday so I like clean burning loads(CFE).
Does anybody know if the 17 fireball will feed out of a 223 mag in a bolt action? I know it's got the same case head and diameter but the round is a bit shorter. I'd love to shoot it out of a Rem 7 with 10rnd mags. If not, maybe I'll go with the 17x223 and load it down. Suppressors my be the answer but I can put a nice rifle together for what they cost to acquire and license.

17 peewee is a cool little cartridge. 30 carbine necked down to 17, the 17 mk4, and 17 javelina are cool too, all should run in a Cz 527 magazine

I think I'd like to put a suppressor on my .204 CZ 527 for that stuff. The .204 surely does a fine job on the little rascals.

BTW, the 527 mags work great for me with rimless cartridges like the .223 & .204.

We're seeing the little devils. I hadn't thought about the stealth approach much. I like the idea of a can though. Every bit as much fun as pdogs just smaller, and you can get into 22 range.

I built a .221FB on a action that was a .223 originally and it doesn't feed very well from the BDL style magazine. You could get a PTG, or similar, bottom metal to single stack center feed them from AR-15 mags. It should feed better being a center feed.

22BR easier on barrels than your bigger 22's based on a shortened 308 case so no feed problems and they are wicked accurate.

The 17 Hornet sound like a good round for what you are doing.
The 17 Fireball or 221 Fireball would also be good picks.

I have CZ527 in 22-hornet it is pretty low for noise, a 221 in a 24" barrel not much differance between it and my 223 for noise. I think you need a 19 badger from james cahoon it is smack between the K-hornet and the 221 for noise and has 223 ballitics. I think it is the perfect p-dog cartridge and is made on a CZ527 with a pac-nor 24" barrels in two different contours. The Badger has no rim and holds about 15 grains of powder where the 221 case holds about 17 grains. If you are trying to keep the noise level down this is the solution.

CZ527 22-Hornet, Rem 700 221 fireball, Rem 700 223rem.
