I've been working on some loads for a 270 using 140 grn Ballistic tips and 130 grn Accubonds. I've noticed that my loads appear to be rather long. My distance to the lands with the 140 BT is 3.390 and with the 130 AB it's 3.480. That just seems like the chamber for my rifle is too deep. My father in law has his set with 130 grn BT's at 3.285. Am I being paranoid or is this just the way my rifle is built?

Bowhntr,

Most rifles are made with long throats anymore, this is called free bore.
Not too big a deal so long as the loads fit in the magazine. Many times seating the bullet longer will give you better accuracy.
What rifle do you have and what kind of accuracy are you getting?

Bowhntr - I've had a similar experience in my .270 and was nervous as well. Overall length of about 3.410, with 130 gr ballistic tips. Work your loads up carefully, watch for pressure and you should be OK.

Your loads aren't long if they don't hit the lands and will function through the magazine box. Factory loads are just short.Rick.
