Finally purchased my big bore today. Showed up to Wally World with cash in hand. Mr. CounterMan called Marlin to see if they had the 1895 in 45-70. No dice. Because of the SHOT show, they are totally tapped out for a month or two.

Anyhoo, called the local GS and told him Wally's price - he came within $12 and even had one in stock. YIPEEE!!!!!

I even purchased some 405 grain Remington SP's that were calling out. However, 99% of things shot through this will be reloads - likely be Barnes Solids or XBullets. Even some hardcast, I'm sure. I'm HAPPY!!!

tapehoser,

Very Nice! An 1895 is on my "wanted" list. I have had the Marlin-itus bug for a while now. In fact, I already have the dies, brass, and bullets.
The 45-70 is a very versital round with a lot of load data out there for a wide varity of bullets ranging from 250 grs to 500 grs. Heavy Hard cast bullets can be loaded to a level of performance some people would never believe. Powder choices include black powder for the traditionalist too.

Tell us more about your intentions with your 1895 and what you plan to hunt.

Very intriguing rifle and caliber. I have seen a few, but never owned one. I too would like to hear your plans for it.

Well, I went to Sportsman's warehouse yesterday and purchased 2 boxes of Barnes XBullets in .458 cal - one box of 300 grain, one 350. And another box of 50 Hornady Interlock bullets.

I also got a pound of H4198 and some CCI Large Rifle Primers (they were out of Winchesters).

Anyhoo, the 300 grain bullets will be placed atop 55.0 grains of H4198. The 350 grainers will be placed atop 52 grains.

I have been looking into Alaskan outfitters and have found a guy that (if I bring 3 friends) will take us all for a moose/bear hunt at 3K apiece. That's not including our airfare.

Anyhoo, since I'm already planning on, and signed up for, the muzzleloader deer hunt here in Utah, I won't use this gun to hunt game until 2007. But I'm sure I will be plenty good with it when that time comes!

I may, also, in the near-ish future, load up some 500 grainers for some type SHTF scenario. Who knows. I have lusted for this gun in this caliber for 2 years and finally had the money and reloading know-how to make it happen.

Thanks!

Oh, and by the way, turns out I bought the wrong bullets. They were spire-pointed bullets. Would not work nicely in a lever action.

Anyhoo, went to Cabela's and got some 300 grain Barnes XFN bullets. Barnes actually marks the two boxes differently. The ones for 45-70 are actually marked "45/70". Anyhoo, got em loaded up over 52 grains of H4198. Very pretty bullets!

Sounds like a hot load!
The Barnes #3 Manual shows a MAX load of 49.0 grs H4198 for a 1895 Marlin and 54.0 grs for a Rugar No. 1.

You might want to double check your loads.

I load 51 grains of H4198 behind the N 300 PT, and get 2195 fps over my chrony. I started with 55 grains and worked down. 55 was clearly too hot, got about 2400 fps and a lot of case head expansion. I do not regard 51 grains as hot. I can't speak for the Barnes 300X, but I doubt if 52 grains will blow up your gun. 2200 fps will get you a +2"/-3" point blank range of 170 yards, in theory. That's probably more than I will ever need. By the way, to do your own trajectory work, go to www.norma.cc click on british flag, click on "ballistic" and go to "design your own bullet". fill in BC and bullet weight and play with the rest of the values.

Tapehoser, that is a nice looking gun, too. You got better wood than I did by far. I have never owned a gun that was as much fun as my Marlin. Happy hunting.

quickload shows a pressure of about 73,000 psi with the xfn barnes loaded to a length of 2.550" with aload of 52.0 gr. of h4198. The partion because it is much shorter is a 40,000 psi load. i don'yt think i'd be firing the xfn's loaded to that length with that load. Granted quickload isn't perfect but with the stated 51 grain load and the 300gr. patitions it shows a predicted m.v. of 2147 whichis pretty close to reality

Got one in a Cowboy 26" octagonal bbl.

try 300 grain Partitions and RL-7.

The group to the right is 3 shots at 100 yds. The .55" is edge to edge.
