Forgot that this was on my phone. Taken 2018, last time I was fly fishing for silver salmon on the Tsiu River, Alaska. We saw this fellow in the same area day after day. He didn't mind our presence on the river. He surely did drive other bears away from his fishing area though! It was interesting to watch him herd the salmon into the shallows, where they became easy prey for him.

Thanks. Just a cell phone video. I'd taken my good camera on that trip, but it got kinda mangled and wasn't working. Shame, because the weather was unusually sunny that trip and there were more bears on and near the river than normal as well. I only managed to get them with my cell phone. Phooey. And, haven't been back to the Tsiu River since 2018 either. Was my best ever opportunity to photograph and video the brownies.

Perhaps another opportunity will arise? :)

The round belly on that bear is proof enough that it is a successful fisher!
And while he didn't bother you, I bet he would have shown displeasure to any unwelcome fisherman that dared to encroach on his fishing hole, and moved them along quickly too! 😰

Awesome video Guy!
You must have been fairly close to him. He looks like a brute.

Do you fish with Derrick up there?
I've fished from Tom & Katie's lodge: http://alaskawilderness.com/TsiuRiver.htm

I think that our first trip with them was in 1999 or 2000. Dad went almost every year for nearly twenty years. I went a half dozen times or so I'd guess. The trips kinda blend together now. When I'd go it was usually Dad and me, and two of our good friends.

Haven't been back since 2018. Dad got too old for it. He was 91 last time he fished it with us. He did love that river and those folks at the lodge.

Am thinking I may make a return trip next September, just because. It won't be the same without Dad, we fished that river together quite a few times. Perhaps one or both of my sons will join me. That would be nice.

On our last trip, my niece tagged along and did real well: https://forum.nosler.com/threads/alaska-tsiu-river-2018.38331/

I remember your report on that trip with your Dad and your Niece, Guy. That was a great time, without a doubt. Unfortunately, each of us does grow old (at least by one year each circuit of the earth around the sun). And the aging process does leave its marks. So great that you have those memories of fishing with your dad. That is a priceless treasure.
