I understand the shortage of handgun ammo and .223 but why .22LR? I also see small rifle primers and some .223 powders but am wondering why everything is gone. Are people really scared or crazy?

Let's guess as to when we will see supplies come back.

My guess is mid July. (wishful thinking)

No body's crazy. The Second Amendment is under assault by many power grabbing politicians in the country and people are concerned about Sen Feinstein's and Pres Obama's threats to our way of life and our Constitution. This is no joke!

I could not even find a bag of lowly .380 cases online yesterday. It took me two days to find these cases. I am actually buying .380 carbide dies and components, something which I would never do in normal times. I normally load for hunting pistols but not for small calibers.

I think that you have a few factors at work.
- When people are looking for something like 223 and 9, and can't find it, they are scooping up the 22LR because they probably have a rifle chambered for it and they want to leave with 'something'.
- A lot of folks, on a tight budget, can't afford the skyrocketing prices, so they go to 22LR to let them keep shooting
- A lot of 22LR analogs (ARs, MP5, 1911 types) have been released.

My guess is we won't come out of this until December

Most of the rednecks around here don't have enough $ to buy very
much at any one time  , so I'll make a run around the local rural
shops to see whats still on the shelves.

Because when the AR's run out the closest thing to it is the 10/22's and others. Also do not forget that the rimfires are the ones we CAN NOT handload.

A simpler explanation is undue panic!

You can not buy diddley around these parts, bad economy or not. No ammo, no rimfire, no primers, cases, bullets or powder (to speak of). The larger stores have a few off-brand, off-usage powder cans. Hunting rifles are still in stock but AR or military types are gone. Most semi auto pistols are gone. One store that I went to only had a couple of break-top, relic revolvers in stock and they are a large handgun seller.

On ammo, the only rimfire available is bird shot, the only 9mm ammo out there is the $25/20 stuff. As usual .380 ammo is gone! Fortunately, I shoot the .357 Mag and .45 Colt revolvers and there is some ammo for those still around.

Spot on. There is growing sense of concern at what government might be doing. Even the prospect that the present administration could issue an executive order impinging on the freedom to secure arms and/or ammunition generates a sense of disease. Compound this with the generalised sense of a lack of safety in the population because police cannot, or will not, respond to some calls, and people who have never had the desire to own firearms are impelled to purchase a weapon. Now, add into the mix the information that is bruited about in the "B Section" of major newspapers and a growing number of blogs, that the government appears to be securing larger than normal ammunition stores, and arms, ammunition and components begin to be scarce. In part, it is the free market at work as demand outstrips demand; in part, this is driven by some large purchases by government entities.

Depends on where ya look and what you are looking for.
I was in Lubbock Tx over the weekend and went to a gunshop there Sat afternoon on my way out of town for a bird hunt. I didn't have alot of time but thought I'd pop in anyway.
They had alot of various powders and 2-3k .224 projectiles at reasonable prices considering the current times.
I was looking for some H380 and some .224 77 or 80 gr SMKs.
They had both on the shelf.
I didn't hang around long enough to see what else they might have, as the line at the check out register was 5 deep.
The two guys that checked out in front of me bought about 500 rounds of 9mm @ $20.00 a box......

Went to walmart yesterday. Asked the guy if he had any 22 LR. He said they had cases of them at 9 am. One guy came in bought a few boxes. He texted his buddies and by 9:30 all was sold.

Now, that is panic buying.

On some other websites they are being sold for extremely high prices.

I know that things are very hard to get. Especially powder and primers for reloaders, and ammo for those who don't. I was able to pick up what I needed here and there. I have bullets currently in route for .459 and .284 neither were difficult to find or above last years prices. I wonder when it will get better. Its pretty clear that congress will not pass much if anything, and I think bummer will give up soon, his attention span seems to be short lived on most issues.

I think that the lowly .22 LR round just may be the ultimate survival round in a SHTF situation. It doesn't have very a loud report and can be used to secure a more powerful weapon from "the enemy". It can, with proper shot placement take down a deer or other failry large animal. Maybe the panic buyers don't really know just how useful a .22 can be, but they need something. My next door neighbor who recently moved in only owns one gun, a bolt action .22 LR. I know because he asked me to fix it because it constantly misfired. After about two or three primer stikes it would finally go bang. I tore the bolt apart and after a very serious cleaning the rifle is now quite functional. I even sighted the scope in for him as it was way off.
I'd probably shoot mine more but I shoot a lot of cast bullets in the .308 and 30-06 which it probably just as good. 8) I hadn't had my .22 out in years so the last two trips to the range I bought it along to shoot while the centerfire rifles were cooling off.

$57 for a brick of .22 !! That is a crock of crap. I must admit that I began drinking the cool-aid about a year after the first election when the drought began to clear up. I again stocked up on powder the week following the Sandy Hook incident. It is a sad state of affairs when folks gouge each other to turn a profit. On the up side, if there is any, I now have a list of businesses in my area that I will NEVER step a foot in again.

When anything is threatened in our shooting industry, all are subject to supply and demand. Seems most are taking no chances, I can't say I blame them and do the same myself. Just again, the mfg's sold more (likely a years worth or more), in such a short time. And likey double that of "09". And I agree, the .22LR is likely the most valued in a lot of situations.

I would expect the "Captain America" hero, good guys on "Campfire" to hose their best friends or anyone else during this crisis to prove that they have a brain for money and just not for crotch-scratch-and-sniff. However, the current crisis is not about them and their capacity to cheat their fellow space travellers.

I thought that things got out of hand right after Obama was elected. This time nobody in Washington has really done anything yet but talk and yet within a week, Americas, scum capitalist's are already selling primers for over $100 a block. I hope that this turns out to be a pig in a poke. But in case it does not go away soon, I have augmented normal my shooting supplies and added some dies for auto pistol, with cases and bullets, just in case. We all need to hope that this is just more smoke and mirrors from the Washington, Hatter's Tea Party and that things will be normal soon.

Honestly fellas I could never do that to a fellow member. I would rather die than advertise 22's at that price.
