Sighting in. What range & why?

Sierra has good MPBR data printed In their exterior ballistics tables. Here is one I use: .284" 175gr sierra SPBT. 7mm rem mag, 2900fps muzzle velocity, Zero 305yrds, MPBR 365yrds. 5" + 5" - then 400yrds is -10" 500yrds 26"

With my 150gr HV in my 30-06 I sight it in at 250yds is my zero, -6" at 330 yds. hold on top shoulder at 340yds and good out to 430yds. Anything past this and I range the yardage know my clicks from my 250yd zero and up to 600yds by heart. So 20 clicks for 450yds, 23 for 475, 26 for 500, 30 for 525, 33 for 550, 37 for 575 and 40 for 600. Droped a couse deer at 618 yards with this method and was using the older version of a 6x42mm Luepold . I am with Guy on this, keep it simple, because simple works.

An inch high with the 250 Accubonds will give me a 150 yard zero and about -2 inches at 150. That works for me with a 107 years old cartridge.

I also just use a 200 yard zero. Which adds up to being about 2" high at 100 yarsd for most of my rifles. O'Connor used to suggest 3" high on all hunting rifles but I like the 2" high better, as the 3" has caused me to shoot over animals when I didnt have the time to take the bead I wanted.
