Some advice, by proxy

Charlie may be onto something about letting your dad work through what he wants. However, that rifle on Gunbroker would be ideal for someone wanting a fine deer rifle.

Charlie,

He is unsure what he wants, clearly, but even he will admit that he cannot come to a conclusion, as when he does, he'll promptly change his mind.

I simply send him things that meet some of the criteria and let him go from there. One day he wants a Tikka, the next he wants an Encore.

I think he would really enjoy that Mauser if he did it up right, but he feels it's not worth doing because he would not be able to sell it for what he will put into it. My point is that if it creates the rifle he wants at a price HE is willing to pay to have, then it's money well spent. But that's only if he'll be happy with the outcome.

Now I did a few more gunbroker searches and turned up some Encore Pro Hunters in 280 with fluted 28" barrels. That has his interest.

The problem he faces, and he'll readily admit this, is some of his criteria conflict.

He wants an easy-to-load/unload rifle, so that is what draws him to a single shot or dbm-setup. He wants a rifle in "something different". The Encore and Tikka both would fit that, as he currently hunts with Winchesters. He wants something that is a bit lighter in recoil, but is hesitant to go below .264, and REAL hesitant to go below .257. Flipside, he doesn't want to go over .30, although a .30-40 would be pretty good, I think, for his stated purpose.

So...that leaves, unless I'm missing something:

-257 Roberts, .25-06
-260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmoor
-.270 Winchester
-7mm08, 7x57, .280 Remington
-.30-40, .308 Win

I'm not sure of the chamberings, but the TC Icon was on my list for him to look at, along with a Browning A-Bolt.

I think if someone put a Tikka in 6.5x55 or .260 Rem in front of him, it'd get bought. Likewise for an Encore.

Aleena,

I would love to do a project like that. My father needs to put moth balls in his wallet to keep the moths from eating the stale, moldy money, however, lol. He would have an aneurysm over the cost... ;)

Building out his existing mauser sporter was, however, something I suggested to him. Perhaps your thought process and that existing rifle could be combined....perhaps....

That would be very cool Tom. Why didn't you think of that? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

I am obviously late to the party, story of my life, carry on and best of luck to you and your father on this project

Pick up a few 7mm 120 grain BTips and load them up for him to use in his 7mm-08. Very mild recoil and he might just learn to love his current rifle all over again. Deadly on critters and extremely accurate. Hint: SPS has them for sale right now, too. These bullets made me love my Rem Model 7 lightweight bolt gun. If he's going after "bigger" critters, he'll still have the option of loading up some heavier bullets.

Tom, If you dad is fussy like me, he will not like any of the Browning Japanese triggers, especially A-Bolts. I have owned (4) A-Bolt rifles in .243 up to .300 WSM and all of them had creepy, ragged triggers with backlash. I took them apart, adjusted, stoned them and removed backlash but they still felt like pulling a brick over concrete for creep.

For myself, a .257 Roberts, 6.5x55 or 7x57 Mauser is an ideal deer and medium game cartridge, certainly for stand hunting whitetail. He evenually will decide what he wants.

Charlie, you are correct.

He keeps coming back to either a Tikka or Encore. He also keeps coming back to the 6.5 calibers. I talked to him some more today and said, "You're not in a hurry, just watch for a Tikka or Encore in a 6.5 cal...one will come along eventually."

I think that's what he's going to do.

You're just "fashionably late". You made a good entrance. May as well hang around and see how it ends. :)

There is a pretty sharp 6.5 in the classifieds here on the forum.
It would be a great shooting rifle

Blessings,
Dan

Tom, my husband reminded me that one of our daughters wants to buy a new shotgun before our family goes on our Dove hunting trip this year and is going to sell her 6.5 x 55, it is a Dakota 76 Alpine Deluxe. Look it up and if interested I will check with her for more info. Actually let your father look it up and see if he likes the looks of their rifles or not. Dont underestimate the little Swede caliber, it is a cool round and has served our daughter well.

The heck with Tom and his father. I can give her a dollar down and a dollar a month until its paid off.

Seriously A, that is a nice looking rifle and the more I read the more I liked it. You might want to go back however and look at toms original response to you, as it would seem that it might be close to impossible to get his dad to go for this LOL

I do agree with you about the Swede, I also like the caliber.

I need an address so as to send my one dollar down payment

Sorry Sean, but if Tom's dad decides to pass and Tom as well, I might have to try and out bid ya. lol

In all seriousness, that is one wickedly nice rifle and caliber. Honestly, I could see my wife using that rifle. Only if others pass though.I'd even shelve the Beisen build lol

Tom, I think you need to have a long talk with your dad about this. Seems to fit alot of what he is looking for in a rifle minus a few aspects, but I think those could be overlooked.

Aleena,

All I can say is wow....

I have relayed to him info on the rifle, but i will imagine he is looking for something a bit lower cost than that.

I will see what he says, however.

Aleena, apparently I have to get in line behind toms dad, tom, sean, and kelly. But count me another one who would be interested, especially on the plan Sean purposed to you.

Tom, I am another who likes the little Swede and you dad might also. It would certainly fit some of his criteria for a new something

Heck, even I could do THAT plan! ;)

I would actually consider shelving some projects as well, on this one. Dad's really not going to want to look at that price range, but when it's time to seriously talk about selling it, Aleena, you know where to find me. I'd at least be interested in seeing where the discussion will go.

I would never discount the Swedish round. I have a military gun in that round, my dad has several as well, and same for my brother. I've shot a couple whitetails with it and it did well.

I talked to my dad at our annual family picnic today, and he said he'd be afraid to hunt with a rifle such as that! ;)

Aleena,

That's a really special round. And the old worn out outdated Swedes always shoot especially if they were done right in a long action. That's probably the 6.5 that I will pick up someday soon. Probably a custom on a M70 or a Mauser or find a factory original to do her justice. It's a good thing you didn't wave that shiny object in front of me last week as I had a very weak moment.

Jake

Jake Thank you, I understand your point about seeing something you want when at a weak moment in ones life. In my case I need to make sure my husband is having a weak moment when I see something I want LOL

Sean, John, Kelly, Tom, i will relay your offer to her,

Tom, you have three girls so I am giving you a heads up about what to expect in the future. I emailed her and ask her what she wanted for the gun, and if she was selling it with or without the scope . I got an email back, saying "mom, I just finished finals , you know I am presently in the local fox hunting contest, I am trying to sell a horse and I am trying to find a shotgun to take on our trip together, --I have no time at the moment to think about this"

I didnt email back, but I wanted to and say ----"Well EXCUSE ME" LOL Actually you may not have this problem as neither of the girls ever talk like this to their father--but tell Michel to get ready LOL

Tom, we will see her soon and i will have her father ask her and she will give him a more civil answer and then I will let you know, thanks for the interest and all the best in the search for a rifle for you dad.
