Some years ago one of my good hunting buddies had a M700 BDL in 7MM Rem mag - he shot a couple of deer- a few moose and bears with it - all good ! THEN One day a black bear got away from him after being what he thought was shot GOOD ! So he wanted more muscle and we chatted about it and he decided to get it rebarrel the m700 and have it chambered in 340 W BEE .After that he shot all his game with 1 shot kills - he loves it - its still the only hunting rifle he has - he shoots grouse ? LOL to moose to bears with it with 250 Gr Nosler Partitions only ! Hunting would be a lot simpilier if i could just have one hunting rifle and a lot cheaper too !

Cheers RJ

That sounds about right. The 338's do get it done pretty well. Your buddy sounds like a smart guy. Not much getting away from a 250 PT.

I think that if/when I build a .300 H&H/.340 Weatherby in a M70, I'm just going to ship the rifle and barrel to Lee Christiansen (Redneck at 24HCF) and tell him, "Mongo want .340 M70!" and let him worry about dimensions, because I'm sure he's done a hundred of them.

The 340 is a cool round, it would be neat to see in a model 70.

Oh, trust me, thoughts of a 700 in .340 have passed through my mind... 7mm RM/.300WM donors are pretty reasonable around here (well, at home that is). 25-26" SS barrel, McMillan Classic stock, profile the barrel to hit a weight of 8.5-9 pounds with a 3.5-10x40 VX3 (with M1 elevation turret) in Talley LWs... I'm pretty sure I can blame my infatuation with a .340/700 to a Ross Seyfried article in G&A in the late '80s/early'90s.

I have a Factory REM M700 Stainless Steel 24 " barrel with detachable mag and a black Synthectic Stock chambered in 300 Weatherby Mag . I think they only produced this exact model for 2 years in 96-97 ? I like it ! I just installed Talley silver aluminum 1 piece mounts- bases and a silver Leupold V111 3.5-10 scope on it ! :)

Cheers RJ :)
