Sooty Brass???

Maybe someone can explain why I got sooty brass while trying to develope a load for my 300 Sav using 150PT and BL-C(2). Hodgdon states a min of 36gn and max of 39. I started at 37 and went to 39. I was using new Win brass, GM210M. The brass was coming out sooty at the back end and some down the side. I could not get it to shoot consistently, spray and pray was the norm. I did shoot some Rem brass with 150AB and 40gn of IMR 4064 and didn't have the sooty problem or the spraying of bullets. Any ideas as to why the soot on the Win brass? Would trimming the brass to much cause this, which I don't think I trimmed all that much (I'm at work and can't remember what I trimmed the brass to).

Rich,

Sounds like some hard W-W brass.
Do you have any R-P brass to try?

Rem brass is what the 150AB loads used, so yes, I have some Rem brass. I ordered brass from the Shooter's Pro Shop (they advertised it as being Rem stuff) and got a bag of Win. Didn't think it a big deal as this was new load devlopement and I would use the Win brass for that bullet/powder load.

I have some 125BT & H4895 loaded up for testing using the Win brass. I'll try it and see what happens.

The case mouth is definately not expanding and sealing off the chamber.
This "usually" means the load is too mild.
I've never experienced "hard brass" but I guess it's possible. I do know that later lots of H380 have been pretty slow burning. This is where a chrono comes into play and helps out....if you were getting slower than normal speeds it would be telling you the load is really mild.

That's the odd thing as I started out above Hodgdon's min and it didn't get much better at their listed max. I'll try out my 125BT & H4895 loads this weekend using the Win brass.

I use IMR4895 40-41 grains with a 150 remington bullet and my 300 shoots lights out.

ball powder is dirty till you get close to max working pressures (about 60k PSI) so your loads were pretty mild.

I was having sooty brass w/ my 300wsm, (varget or H380 - can't remember). I narrowed my problem down to the fact I was just barely seating the bullets in the case. THe case didn't seal to the walls of the chamber soon enough and I had lots of gas leakage.

Thanks for the replies. I may re-address working up a load for the 300 Savage at a later time. I want to get my RUM loads developed first. I may go out and shoot the 125BTs I have loaded with H4895 and see if I still get the soot. If I do, it may be a Win brass issue with this rifle. I already sent the Shooter's Pro Shop a message about the brass brand issue. They advertised Rem brass, but sent Win brass.

As for seating depth, the max the rotary mag will allow is 2.6". This is what Nosler suggests for a COL, but Hodgdon says 2.52".

Isn't this loading stuff such fun?????? :) :) :)
