Southern MI Deer Rifle

Very neat, Jim. You could be seeing the beginning of quite a collection. There are still a few Marlins chambered in rounds I haven't seen you mention ... yet.

Very nice Jim. Can't wait to see how it works for you! Should be a deer slayer of the highest order in your woods.

MI has announced that the use of a center fire rifle will be legal in Zone 3, which has historically been the shotgun zone. Cartridge must be a straight wall, 35 cal or larger with a min length of 1.160" and a Max length of 1.800".
I'm thinking of a Marlin 1894 44 Rem Mag but am open to other suggestions.

.41 Remington Magnum.
If you can find a Marlin Lever Action it would be just the kick in the pants you're looking for. [emoji2]

Well I got her home yesterday and managed to shoot a Nosler 240 gr JHP and a 300 gr JHP into the jugs.
Both were impressive and will prove to be deadly on WT this year.

Trying to get a base and rings so I can scope her up and get started with load development.

I'll post some pictures soon.

Here she is all scoped up.
I had an extra VX III 2.5-8x36mm in the safe so I mounted her up.

Man, that looks great Jim! ...I like it pal, very nice setup!

Thanks fellas. Its a little more scope than I want but it will work for now.
I'm leaning towards the Nosler 240 gr SP. I'll get it zeroed and clock some loads.

I'd load it with lead bullets (hard cast... big, flat meplat)...much cheaper, and just as effective.

Nice choice by the way...I do like a fine lever action.

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about the Ruger 44 Carbine semi? I have been thinking that may be a slick rifle for southern Michigan woods.

Randy

The Ruger would be awesome but prices are way up there.
Wish I had one.

JD, no flies on that setup of the Marlin 94 and the 2.5-8x36 scope either. Should kill whitetails just fine.

Man, if I were in the market for a 44 Mag rifle, it'd be a hard choice between the Ruger TBear runs (the bolt gun) and the rifle Jim just picked up. Both look like awesome set ups. Should be a really sweet combo for those woods in Michigan and a whole lot of other places where your not going to be shooting longer.

There has been a lot of discussion on which of the rounds to in the ever changing regs here in Indiana on the rifle round regulations over the past few years.

At first we thought it was exactly as yours is posted (and is also the same going on in Ohio reportedly anyway, for the first time this year. http://ohiodnr.gov/news/post/ohio-wildl ... egulations )but the "must be a straight wall" somewhere got lost in the shuffle or never existed on paper when all started here in Indiana.

I never did figure that one out. Arguments STILL occur in forums if such ever existed at all so I'M GLAD it is plainly spelled out for the other states who are switching from "slug only" to allowing some rifle rounds. It got pretty convoluted here for awhile. More than once I had others openly giving thanks that they lived OUT of the Midwest for that single reason. LOL.

What ended up happening is history to most who have read anything about Hoosier rifle rounds being created and used the past few years but it appears things are about to change again.

I posted the link on my thread on "New Regs........New 257 Bee??" thread here where the proposal is now on the table to go 243 and up with no case limitations ( similar I hear to other states???)

But back OT:

At first when I had THOUGHT we had to use straight wall rounds, I was trying to justify finding and paying for a Ruger No 1 in 460 S&W to fit the 1.8" straight wall regs but went with my home brewed wildcat when I realized the whole straight wall regulation wasn't there (anymore or ever, I don't know) and while I am glad I did and loved doing so.........

The 460 in a rifle would sure be a fun one IMHO.

As always picking a round how deep the pockets are that are paying for it and distances one wishes to use it mandate what ends up on the short list but I have a couple buddies using the 44mag in the Ruger bolt gun and within NORMAL shotgun ranges they have had good results with it on at least a half dozen whitetail.

It came as a blessing to them having a young teen boy wanting to hunt that has had health issues all his life and slugs just weren't the ticket for him with his overly slender frame. Three generations of hunters in the family and Gramps is the one who bought it, but I've seen screaming matching between the boy and his dad over WHO was using the 44 mag Ruger on opening day.

Only my 2 cents and it's much like the others also posting.
God Bless

What about a 44mag with a sabot for 358", or any larger strait walled cartidge thats 1.8"?

Than a bolt action rifled barrel shot guns pretty nice too. Was not some here 410 shot shell case with 45 cal bolts in a rifled barrel and it was basicly mild 45-70?

Jim,

Try the Federal 300 gr. Hard Cast load or the Buffalo Bore 300 gr. LBT load, both of those are like fright trains.......... I had that same gun only it was a 1892 44P, ported with a really short 16 1/2" barrel, it was a great little packing gun but I later sold it.

I have owned and used for deer hunting, both the Ruger semi-auto and the Marlin 1894 lever action. They both worked just fine mechanically, with similar accuracy but the setup is basically a 100 yard system which was too range confining for me.

Hi JD and the rest of the gang. With the rule changes I found myself looking for some thing to use. I found it in my safe a Savage 110 LH in 450Marlin. I started by trimming a few cases to 1.795 and using a self cast 500gr rngc bullet. By using this long bullet I was able to seat them out to full length and have almost as much internal capacity as the full length round. So the 450Marlinx1.8 got started. With a charge of Varget I am get about 1750-1800 and have shot 3" groups at 200 yds . I know that this is faster then needed but it help the drop. Clint
