There is a lot of talk about rifle stocks...most of it revolves around fine wood or fiberglass or Kevlar...I'm curious about what your preferences are for drop at comb and drop at heel...and why you prefer that.

Just something I thought of today...thought it might make for some interesting discussion...mostly talking about bolt action rifles.

I don't much care about weight one way or the other will work put shape and fit is crucial. Win SG/Sporter or Rem Mtn Rifle if I want something with a cheek piece. Or a good varmint like on the Ruger V/T or A5 nonadjustable with a good sized palm swell. I don't mind the FW stocks. Must be 13.5 LOP and a Pachy and I'm happier than a pig knee deep in mud.

Can't remember now if I spec'd the McMillan for my Green Machine at 14" or 14.5" LOP.

I do remember that at the time I also had a match rifle with an adjustable LOP, and that I had McMillan duplicate the LOP I used for prone competition, on the stock I ordered for the Green Machine. Sure fits me well, particularly from prone, though it is an excellent general - purpose stock for a precision rifle. That's the M40A1-3. An updated version of the good old USMC M40A1 stock.

If that makes any sense!

I suppose it's somewhat due to being a product of the M-16/AR-15 generation, but I prefer a relatively high comb height, and a stock with little drop.

Also, whatever Remington did with the CDL stock... Yowza! That fits me just real nice. I particularly like the very slim forearm. Makes for a light, comfortable, easy-handling rifle that's just great to carry up the big ridges in search of mountain mulies.

I'll have to check out haw I speced my last McMillan, but I'm sure it had a 14.5"+ LOP. But then I'm a genetic statistical outlier, as the statistic nerds would say. I will agree that Remington got a lot of stuff right with the Classic stock. But then they also got things right with the 870 and 1100/1187 as well.

I think my next McMillan will be another tactical stock, likely an A5. Probably going to go full tacticool pimp job on it, with adjustable cheekpiece, and maybe the spacer system on the butt pad. Probably going to have the action moved forward in the stock, so I will have a longer reach to the trigger... My current A3 Sporter is a little cramped for the baseball mitts I call my hands.

This is assuming I can find another heavy barrel 700 in .22-250 or .243 to put in it, of course.... thank you, trigger recall....

I'm curious where they get those measurements...drop at comb and drop at heel.

I thought they were measured from the centerline if the bore...but there's no way that could be right...at least it doesn't look right judging from the pics...

Hmmmm.....

And while Remington left a bad taste in my mouth with some quality issues on their rifles...I will agree wholeheartedly, the model 700 stock has ALWAYS felt like it was made just for me...could be because that's what I learned on...

EDIT:
Noticed something looking at the Remington pics that I had never noticed before...the 700 also "appears" to sit a little more to the rear in the stock than some others (Win, HS precision, Copper, Dakota, etc.)...sorta like the Nosler rifles (which is what this is about)

Yup same here, the CDL stock is probably about the best fitting stock there is for me, from the factory.

I also like the Monte Carlo stock on my 338. Wished I had a couple more of them too!

My old M725 is a very good fit for me also, so is my M77 and the Classic feels good also just waiting to shoot the Classic for a real good feel. The B&C Medalist on my 300Bee works also. I believe all are right around 13.25 and fit just right for heavy clothes.
