Strange Chrony readings

I have a Shooting Chrony (master model)
I have been shooting over it for years.
Lately I have been getting strange readings.
I will have a group of readings that are in the expected range (2912, 2920, 2917) and then a (3652) or a (2645). Same bullet, same powder charge, same primer, same case, same coal.
Any ideas?

Shooting w/o the diffuser in place on bright days will often give aberrant readings. If the unit is not fully extended, it will definitely give high readings. If the unit has been bent so that the back half droops, it will also give aberrant readings. Alternatively, the electronic eyes do go wonky on occasion. It can be recalibrated at the factory. Before doing that, however, ensure that the eye is clean (gently swab with a Q-Tip slightly dampened with lens cleaner) and see if the unit settles down. Consequently, welcome aboard.

Diffuser has been in place. Days have been bright.
I have had the "not open all the way" problem before.
I have had it for 11 or 12 years.
Haven't thought about cleaning it.
I'll give that a try.
Thanks

DrMike pretty much cover all the bases that I could think of. All I can add is welcome aboard.

Another possibility just to throw out there is sometimes the chrono gets set just a hair too close to the gun. Then the gases or percussion or whatever seem to throw readings into a funk.

Exactly.... I am at the end of my rope (15ft)
Is there a chrony designed for magnum calibers? 30-06 Ai isn't a 338 lapua.
I guess I could try a longer chord.
Thanks for the input.

I've shot many 338 Lapua, 30-338 WBY, 338-378 WBY, 7.82 Warbird, 460 WBY and multiple other rifles chambered in wicked cartridges across my Beta Master Chrony w/o difficulty. These various rifles were occasionally fitted with muzzle brakes, though usually I was not so privileged. At twelve feet, the Chrony can handle these cartridges quite well.

I find that I get errant readings on bright days, and the best readings on overcast days. If the sun is overhead it always seems worse. That is part of the reason I stop shooting once the sun pops over the cover at the shooting range.

A couple of years ago I had readings slowly go up by 100fps shooting in the sun, then go back down when I moved to a shaded area. Same day, same time.

It has been mid afternoon on bright days.
I'll try shooting at breakfast instead of lunch.

I picked a used one up from Fotis and it has been flawless so far. I read the directions and set it up at 10' off the bench which is about 12' from the muzzle. I have had the front diffuser blow off once when shooting my 35 Whelen AI. I was using a heavy charge of slow burning powder which was probably the cause.

I also have an Oehler Model 35 chrony that starts printing by itself when I am about to start shooting, lol. After a few whacks and replugging cords, finally it stops. But it still does it the last few times I have been to the range and getting frustrated with it.

If you a have a Volt meter or better yet a volt meter with a amp tester function. Test the battery. Not all new battery's are good straight out of package. Another issue I saw with one of the new high capacity 9volts was it caused the problem you are having. To much power. That 9v had twice the amperage as a new Everyready or copper top.
