Wow, this is serious! Get this man some targets so he can scratch that itch! Scotty

Also, any targets on the 280 Ackley IMproved and the 35 Whelen I need a reason to pick one of these cartridges in the M48, of course I favor an 06 but have a close affection for the other two cartridges.

Man, you have got to get a Whelen Mike! That is the key right there! You have the 300WM for your heavy 30 cal!.. The Whelen would be really something with your loads I believe. Scotty

Built and marketed by Nosler?

Seriously, Mike, you're going to give a number of us a serious case of rifle envy!

I got an itch real bad but want to make a good choice because I can convince the wife once not twice, so if I make the plunge I need to jump off the right peer.

Hey, remember my 300Win Mag does so much and covers so much so chime in with cartridge suggestions. Man the 7mm 08 would even cause me to cancel my 7x57mm because they are so close. Need help here

Mike,

You can't go wrong with a Nosler M48. Custom action, PacNor barrel aluminum block bedded Bell & Carlson stock with the Nosler buy back gaurentee.
The 280 AI is an amazing cartridge capable of anything NA has to offer. The 35 Whelen is a hammer and can be loaded to nip the heels of the 338 Win Mag. The 30-06 is tried and true for over 100 years. All are great rounds tha will serve you well.

Mike, I know you probably won't go for this, but hear me out. The 270WSM.... Reason being, it is really on the heals of a 270WBY, and I know how you like your Weatherby cartridges. It will run a 130gr bullet deep into the 3300 range, it will also run a 150gr bullet into the 3100 range with no drama. It is a shorter, lighter action than any of the others and would cover any need to have a 7mm anything really. Mine has been absolutely easy to load for and isn't picky about seating depths or really anything. The cases are strong, made for 65K PSI loads and really, it carries the mail short or long. In a Trophy Grade kinda rifle made for more hiking that shooting, I think it makes alot of sense. I know you aren't super fond of the WSM's, but they really do have alot going for them. If the magazine on the Nosler allows you to seat the bullet outside of SAAMI specs (2.860") a little, you can really do some great things. Recoil is pretty mild, but the ballistics really speak for themselves.

If that doesn't suit you, I still stand firmly behind the Whelen. Just a great old cartridge that really is a 30-06 +!

Heck, you are making me wanna Trophy Grade in a 300WSM now! Scotty

OK, I agree but which one and why

Considering my great load with the 225gr AccuBond in my 358Win moving 2576fps and its excellent accuracy along with my outstanding Savage 116 FHSS 300Win Mag and the eleven loads from 130gr to 220gr that I have developed for it, and the spectrum these two cartridges fill, the only choice I see in selecting an M48 TGR is the 243 or the 257 Roberts and I have to think if I really want one of these. If you guys had to choose between these two knowing what I can do with my main to rifles, which one would you choose and why? The only other options is a 30-06 just for the sake of it being a 30-06.

The 30-06 will do anything you need it to do in NA. It covers mice to moose.

The 280 AI has a lot of cool factor. It will push a 160 gr AB to 3000 fps. With a BC of .581, it will deliver a lot of energy down range. It has the power and range to easily take elk at 500 yds. The 140 gr AB at 3200 fps is a flat shooting round making it a fine choice for antelope, deer and sheep.

The 35 Whelen loaded with a 250 gr PT is a real powerhouse round. I am getting 2581 fps from a 22" barrel making it a 400 yd elk and moose rifle. The mass of the 250 gr PT will smash heavy bone and drive it through the vitals. The 225 gr PT has accounted for several WT deer and a 250 lb black bear. There has only been 3-4 blood trails with the deer and they were very heavy and very short.

I have used all three and they are excellent rounds. If you are wanting a long range rifle, go with the 280 AI. If you want to shoot the bigger game animals, the 35 Whelen would be my pick.

Well I am going to wait until hunting season is over, because I am not going to clutter my already planned season with load work and tweaking of loads. Now that said, when it happens it will be a 280AI

I'm eyeballing the M48/280AI myself...what a wonderful cartridge. Oh, and its in a wonderful rifle!

Mike,

Why wait, I have load data for the 280 AI (and 35 Whelen).
You are going to really enjoy the 280 AI.
