Tater is gettin a new gun

Well after having Tater pattern the old 20 Guage sportsman 48 that I was going to have him use for the St. Jude's hunting for a cure youth turkey hunt, I decided he needed some thing that would put more than 1 pellet in the kill zone at 30 yards. So I went and talked to the management at the local Gander mountain,and I must give them kudos for making it possible for me to afford a new shot gun for him to use. They marked the price down on a new H&R pardner pump turkey gun, as there donation to his hunt. It is deeply appreciated as I am on another furlough this week, and may possibly get laid off before this hunt takes place. Here is the gun. They knocked $50.00 off there price. I think he'll like it after I surprise him with it.

Thanks for the input JD! I'm not much of a turkey hunter, I use a 10 guage and just about anything out of it works if they are in range. I'll pick up some heavy shot this week. 8)

I love Turkey hunting, nothing like a run & gun hunt for a big Tom!
Depending on your choke, that hevi shot should easily cover 40+ yds for Tater. My longest kill on a big Tom was 54 yds, using my 870 12 ga 3" with a .670" Pure Gold Turkey choke and Hevi Shot #5. It smoked him.

Pick up a Primos B Mobil Strutting Tom decoy. Those long beards can't resist it. :wink:

I don't know who will be having more fun but I got an idea and you will not only collect a turkey but you will collect memories even if you don't get a turkey. Nice shot gun. Hey, I use an 870 turkey hunting also. Have fun, be care and enjoy the moment.

About 3 years ago I had an 870 that was camo and very short. It kicked like 2 mules! Me and a friend called in some turkeys for Taylor, and after they got finished figuring out the pecking order, they decided to come and see what that sweet little thing looked like that was calling to them. As we sat and listened to them strutting thru the leaves on there way to us, they suddenly started hopping over a log and into view and range. it was like counting the 10 little Indians, only there were 13 of them. you know,1 little,2little 3 little turkeys... well when Taylor Finely shot, they all scattered and nothing was hit. one was so love struck he stuck around, and tater got another shot off. AND STILL MISSED! It flew up in a tree and was still in range, so Tater took another shot. Missed again.
We called one back it came strutting in, and tater took another shot. AND MISSED, It wasn't youth season, So I grabbed the gun, And I missed. I was so fed up, that I handed the gun to my friend and guess what.....HE MISSED TOO! I just looked at him and said lets go.
IOn the way out I heard another turkey, and me and my friend were ready to setup and start calling. I looked at Tater and said Get ready son in my most hushed hunting voice and the look on his face said it all, but he still managed to say " I don't wanna shoot no more daddy" I couldn't do anymore than say OK lets go home and get some breakfast. That was the day he acquired the flinch that we just got over right before Deer season this year. Hopefully the drop and fit of this new pump will not stomp him in the ground. I think I'll pattern the gun myself, and let him shoot target loads in it until the hunt.
I don't know what was wrong with that old 870, it seemed to pattern pretty good, but for some reason that day, nobody could hit anything with it. I traded it for my carry weapon, which is a S&W 38 special. I can shoot it alot better at a different kind of turkey if need be!

Yes I have, that's why I stocked up on Hevi-Shot while they were still selling to the general public via the Hevi-Shot website.

Anyway, JD, is his new shotgun a 12g and is it capable to handle 3" shells? Also, is Tater capable to handle 3" shells? I may have an offer for you. Let me know ASAP. Oh, when is his turkey hunt?

Yes it can take 3 inch shells,it is a 12 guage, and he has shot one that I slipped in while I had him shooting dove and quail loads. He said "why was that one louder?"
It was an 870 with 3" loads that caused him to have a BAD flinch about 3 years ago, So I was cautious not to just have him start shooting 3" shells again. I patterened this gun today while he was at school, and it has a great pattern out to 40 yards. (with the 3 " shells.) for some reason he seems to be shooting low. I am haveing him aim at the top of the head for now, and he is getting about 4 to 5 pellets in the head and Bare neck area of a turkey target. His Hunt is March 20,21,& 22. Thank you he will appreciate it when the bird is down!
